matthew mcconaughey - transformation to a great actor?

I have never really paid attention to mr. mcconaughey. he was always the guy from dazed and confused that said
He wasn't a bad actor by any means, but he certainly wasn't great. But over the last 2 years, he did Mud, Dallas Buyers Club, Wolf of Wall street and True Detective. While i haven't seen wolf of wall street, he gives great performances in the others.
so when did he move from being a run of the mill white dude to delivering great performances?
My wife actually used to refuse to watch movies he was in due to how bad his accent was in a time to kill. But now she loves him.
What say the gods of the movie and tv board?

He's always been a good actor but was kind of floating through the early 2000's with a bunch of romantic comedies. His talent was always there though. I guess he got tired of hearing that he wasn't good and stepped it up a bit. Glad he did, the guy is killing it right now.

I watched an interview with him on CBS Sunday Morning. He basically said he was being paid boat loads of money to be the lead in rom-coms but wasn't really happy with it. He said he sat down with his wife and decided that they had enough money for him to be able to try and transition into serious acting. He said it took a few years of saying no to rom-coms and living off savings but people started to come around to the idea and now he's really taking off

I think I read somewhere that he kind of said screw it a couple of years ago and stopped making bad romantic comedies in favor of more interesting roles. I dunno, you're an artist, you make stuff, sometimes it's bad, sometimes it's really good, sometimes you get on a roll. The key is to keep on doing it and work through the low points.
He's liable to pull off a pretty cool double this year: an Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club and an Emmy for True Detective.
But as great as he's been in stuff lately, in my mind he'll never top Wooderson. Kind of like Sean Penn will never top Jeff Spicoli.

I really hope he wins the oscar
Sweep the SAG, Globe, Oscar would be pretty impressive

I dont think his acting skill has gotten any better. He is just gotten better at picking roles.

I haven't seen Dallas Buyers Club yet. But I don't know if it's possible for him to be any better in that than he is in True Detective. He is operating at a high level in that show.
He's also got that Christopher Nolan movie coming out in November that you know will at least be interesting.

I was talking about this to a few people last week. MM has absolutely transformed in the last few years from the shirtless rom com guy to a highly respected actor. You really see his acting chops in HBO's True Detective of late, and of course Dallas Buyer's Club, Mud, and even Magic Mike.
MM interviewed with SVP on ESPN a few weeks back and said that a few years ago he reached a point where he decided he had never actually challenged himself with the acting roles he usually took. So he made a concerted effort to go beyond his comfort zone and take roles that required more of what he was accustomed to.
You're really seeing his talent of late IMO. His last few roles, and HBO's True Detective, have totally changed my opinion of the guy.

Exactly. See Michael Caine as a great example.

This is the one that did it for me...
Reign of Fire (2002). I had to keep reminding myself that the bald, bearded guy was the same guy from Dazed and Confused and the trailers for The Wedding Planner. When I realized I had to remind myself about it, I understood that he had some acting chops and was just not picking the best projects (at that time).

We watched Killer Joe last weekend. That was a pretty good movie. He was really creepy in that.

Between Mud, Dallas Buyers Club, and Wolf of Wall Street, McConaughey has had the best year of his career.

Yeah he has done some better roles lately. In terms of Wolf of Wallstreet, his character was hilarious but he was only in the first 10 minutes of that movie.

He will always be David Wooderson to me.

He was badass in Reign of Fire. Except for the ending, not really sure what happened there.
