"Best States for Concealed Carry"

Hey guys,
Was cruising the 'net and came across this article "The Best Concealed Carry Sates in 2013"
Short version: LA is #29.
AZ is #1.
I figured we'd do better, but we got dinged for:
Expense of application fee
Requirement to inform LEO of cc
Lack of issuing to non residents

Constitutional Carry or bust

Alabama comes in at #8. Not too bad.
I'm always surprised at AZ. For whatever reason, I tend to think of them as CA-east.

Arizona has been at the forefront of the concealed carry movement for a while. I think they were the first state to adopt constitutional carry.

In Alabama you can't have a loaded handgun in your vehicle unless you have a CCW permit.
No person shall carry a pistol in any vehicle or concealed on or about his person, except on his land, in his own abode or fixed place of business, without a license therefor as hereinafter provided.
(Acts 1936, Ex. Sess., No. 82, p. 51; Code 1940, T. 14, §175; Acts 1947, No. 616, p. 463, §3; Acts 1951, No. 784, p. 1378; Acts
1956, 2nd Ex. Sess., No. 43, p. 336; Code 1975, §13-6-153.)
In Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and a whole bunch of other states it's perfectly legal to have a loaded gun in your vehicle.

Didn't realize you had to inform LEO of cc in La.
Is this with any stop for any reason?

dawg23 listed above... i just remember that when i passed through bama they said i better have my ammo locked in the trunk or some shite if i didnt have a ccp... but in mississippi the vehicle is an extension of my home. I can have a loaded weapon rather i have a ccp or not

this is true, but on the other side of the coin Alabama is one of the easiest and cheapest states to get a CCW permit in. You fill out the form online and then it takes about 15 minutes at the courthouse before you have a hard copy of your license.

Weird list. South Carolina ahead of GA, claiming SC doesn't honor SC permits? Umm, SC is the most finnicky state in the deep south for permits.
Weird.
Weird.

But the permit isn't respected in many other states. On the other side of the coin, LA has great reciprocity.

That's a negative? Not all LEO's are bad guys and most want to go home at night.

I need to make a clarification. I was just pointing out areas where LA had points removed; I was not expressing my personal opinion. Having said that…... personally, from my experiences thus far, I don't think a cc having to inform LEO is a negative. The 2 times I've had an encounter w/ LEO while i was legally carrying concealed, it was just fine; the LEO was respectful, calm and courteous. Likewise, I don't think it's fair or appropriate that LA got dinged 3 points (only received 7 points of 10 points max) because it requires 7-9 hours of training; OTOH, AL got a full 10 points of credit because it requires ZERO hours of training. To me, cc carries w/ extra layer of safety obligation by the one carrying concealed; I don't think it's unfair to require a degree of appropriate and fair training.
I take exception to how some of the factors were structured, as well. For example, a state that has reciprocity w/ 1 state was granted 2 points. A state that has reciprocity w/ 30 states only gets 4 more points. The latter state has reciprocity w/ 30X as many states as the other but only get 3X more points? Seems like some misplaced priorities w/ the scoring system. Nevertheless, it makes for a good discussion.

Bama is very liberal with carry.
Open carry is allowed.
Can get a CC permit by filling out an app. and turn into the local Sheriff. 3 references listed and signed on it and 7.50 for a year, or 37.50 for a 5 yr (40 and they laminate it for you).
Restrictions are places that serve alcohol, courthouses, public gatherings such as concerts, rallies.. etc.
That's about it.
eta-.. yeah.. the transportation of a firearm is kinda dumb.

According to louisiana's reciprocity map, New Mexico doesn't honor our CCL but reading the New Mexico State web site, it lists Louisiana as accepted under reciprocity. Do we just have an old map?
I was planning our summer trip and California is definitely out but I damn near have to drive through New Mexico to get anywhere west.
