Actually, we cannot fly to the moon anymore. That was almost 50 years ago. Hell, half of our population is on welfare.

The Obama administration said it plans to require new cars come equipped with technology that enables them to communicate with each other, a move transportation planners said was a giant step toward ultimately preventing tens of thousands of crashes every year.

Yeah sounds horrible. Car crashes are cool.

Specifically, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration claims, vehicle-to-vehicle technology could eliminate four out of every five of crashes not involving an impaired driver.

4 out of 5? Its hardly worth it!

I'm sure this won't be abused by municipalities.

How? What's a muncipality going to do - have a traffic light warn you its changing when it isn't, just to mess with you?

If you count a family of 4 where one child has medicaid and the two adults work full time and pay for everything else as 4 people on welfare - then yes, you're right.

But dis 'Murica. We don't want the government telling people what to do.
Governemnt regulation is bullchit. If I want to dump waste, then I should be able to. If I want to drive a '79 suburban with no insurance, then I should be able to. The only laws I cotton to are the ones that make people speak English, and the ones that tell people what not to do with their own bodies, like drug use, prostitution, cussing you know.

Driverless vehicles = more unemployment by the tens of millions. Cabbies, truck drivers, delivery drivers, etc. all out of jobs and leeching on the government. Great idea.

well for one, without it would would have been taken over by another nation by now.

I do enjoy the roads they built, or the police protection that keeps me safe.

I like the laws they pass that protect my interests. I do enjoy the idea of someone being ab;e to put my fires out. I also really like this regulation thing. Keeps people from I don't know. Working kids 12 hours a day, makes sure my food isn't contaminated. They also provide me with water and take my sewage away.

Sure I don't always agree with government. But WE COULDN'T MAKE IT WITHOUT IT

that analogy has been made for everything.

You remember the tall tale about John Henry?
Progress always means the extinction of old industries. I never shed a tear for the whalers when I flicked my lights on, nor cried for the boilermakers when I start my car.

You presume cabbies and truck drivers are unable to work any other kind of job? That's nice.

Come on man

And if an occupation becomes obsolete that's not necessarily a bad thing.

fed-gov has a very poor track record of infrastructure investments...projects that go way over budget, not completed on time, have to be re-worked after supposed completion, etc. Spend a little time googling, you'll find plenty of examples.

true, I also like the fact that a fire truck and a paramedic unit roll on every call. On a field trip some years ago to the local fire station with my kid, we were delighted by a "live" demonstration as the firemen suited up, sirens wailed as the paramedic truck and a fire truck zoomed away. I asked our tour guide what the call was, he said a lady at a nursing home felt faint. Thankfully she was ok, the trucks returned shortly where the firemen proceeded to give the trucks the mandatory post-call cleaning.

I also like the fact that our local police department has a homeland security division, several haz-mat trucks, a bomb diffusing robot and an interstate crimes division. Mostly paid for through fed-gov grants. Makes me feel safer. What's also cool is how all of our little municipalities in the metro area also have all this stuff, including independent 911 centers. Real government efficiency at work.

Happy for you, most regulation leads to excessive costs, limits innovation and competition, rigs markets in favor of political donors, etc. Certainly there are times when a heavy hand needs to intervene, but it should be the exception, not the rule.

Yet the federal highway system is one of - if not THE - best in the world.

When you only tally up the cost difference to business, it usually does, that's no surprise.

So lets privatize the police force and the firefighters?
I don't think so..

I was shocked there was a counterpoint. I forget that there are people that far into the fringe.
