Not so much. It's pretty amazing what someone can do when they have the will to live.

First thing I thought. A human buffet, followed by a blood binge.

How do you drift for that long and end up where he did without once getting near land or a boat or something? Just doesn't make any sense

With all due respect....it is a big arse ocean out there.

catching a fish in open water in the ocean, and wrangling it into the boat. think about that for a second. seriously...then imagine him trying to catch a fricking bird! what bird? they typically only fly close to land!

fish would be attracted to the shade of the boat. flying fish would probably land in the boat.

Maybe he caught those fish by dragging his amigo behind the boat as chum. Mexicans are terrific improvising in a pinch.

By feeding little bits of his friend to it?

He was emaciated. I'm guessing he only caught a few birds over the 16 months he was out there.

Yea, but that doesn't mean you can catch them with your bare hands.

we are talking about real life, not Life of Pi

Birds don't land on rafts with predators on them, and if they did, that's once in a blue moon.

I could maybe see him catching a few turtles, no way he caught fish bare handed and no way it was 16 months the way he said.

Hard to believe. In the northwest you can have a hard time catching the smaller salmon, coho.
Albeit in a much different region, catching ocean fish with bare hands is hard to believe.

The turtle blood thing reminded me of an old news story that I read about a family that lost their sail boat in a storm in the Pacific. I remember them mentioning that they were able to catch turtles from a life boat and dingy they had strung together. They were rescued by a passing ship after a couple of weeks.

I still can't envision someone surviving 16 months out there.

Just got finished reading "Unbroken" about the Olympic runner that crashed in a B-24 in WWII and was adrift for over 40 days.

This is unbelievable.

Have been in the middle of the Atlantic, and Pacific, birds are always around.
