everyone should take 20 minutes to watch this TED talk on false memory syndrome (FMS). Elizabeth Loftus: The Fiction of Memory

Your memory can be easily manipulated, to the point of completely changing the actual past in your head.

For example, in a study using a simulated accident, the researchers used different words to describe the accident and asked how fast the witnesses thought the cards were going:

Smashed: 41 mph
Hit: 34 mph

Then they asked if the people remembered any broken glass at the scene (there wasn't). The % who said yes:

Smashed: 32%
Hit: 14%

These false memories convict hundreds/thousands of innocent people each year (especially in sexual assault cases).

Every time there is some mass tragedy, especially a public mass shooting, people come out of the woodwork stating this and that about what they saw. Almost always these memories are false, and this is exactly how conspiracy theorists fuel their obsession.

These false memories also fuel religious fanaticism. These false memories were the foundation for the Satanic moral panic in the 80s and 90s, which convicted tons of innocent people.

Also, domestically, these false memories lead to all sorts of fights between married people.

So remember, next time you want to rely on your memories in an argument, you're almost assuredly changing your memories to suit your point, and you may possibly be creating completely false memories. Your memory is bullshite.

the first comment is epic...EPIC

quote:

The truth is that it is a tool used to keep the extent of pedophilia and satanic ritual abuse hidden from the public as well as the groups behind these crimes. High-level people are deeply involved in these horrific abuses like Hollywood celebrities (Rosanne Barr discusses this here LINK ), govt politicians (Franklin Cover Up by Senator John DeCamp) and Royalty (Brice Taylor LINK .)

These facts are obvious once you do the research.

Notice how the media did not report how English Royalty was deeply connected to Jimmy Savile's pedophilia. You have to use non-mainstream media journalism to understand what's happening.

I feel obligated to at least support the thousands of horribly abused and murdered children each year due to these crimes by helping people become aware of the problem and the methods of discrediting their courtroom testimonies that can help put away the guilty.

Maybe we can end pedophilia and satanic ritual abuse for just one more child by becoming aware of the situation. FMS is a tool that needs to be exposed for what it is.

I wonder why the False Memory Syndrome Foundation is founded by people involved with pedophilia themselves. It's clear that FMS is tool to fool, not to help.

i watched a doc once about this super secret pedophile ring of the elite. i think it was based in OKC and of course nothing ever came of it. i think it's a case where the physical building at issue wasn't even close to being big enough to do what they were accused of

i think some people actually went to jail in OKC for it (and the fringe tried to turn it into a national story)

Thanks...I'll check it out. I love TED Talks.

The topic reminds me of one I heard once regarding remembering self versus experiencing self. This seems quite common as well. In short, we tend to glorify or at least lessen our dissatisfaction of experiences the more time passes and we look back on it later. Think of any family vacation you've been on. Pissed, hot, angry at lines, frustrated with the airport, etc...but then a year or 2 later looking back on it we remember it much more fondly than we experienced it. If you didn't, there wouldn't be another one the following year.

In this case, either we're simply dickheads and unable to appreciate the moment...or we clearly don't have the ability to hold on to those feelings very long and remember our experiences accurately.
