I watched it last night, and thought it was a cheesy, low budget, miscast, inauthentic, poorly written mess. I was also disappointed in Neil Marshall's direction, but gave him the benefit of the doubt that he was hamstrung by the budget. I watched it again today for some reason, and it wasn't nearly as awful as I thought it was. Not sure why I was so hard on it last night. I do think everyone is way too pretty, the writing really sucks in some scenes, and the acting is weak for most of the main characters.

John Silver looks like Heath Ledger's character from "10 Things I Hate About You" all growed up. Why did the crew get the new guy laid again? The guy that plays Flint looks the part, but growls every line to make them more epic or something. So far, i can't see Vane as threatening since I only know him as Jody from Shameless. I think it's going to be a show I hate watch.

Neil Marshall directs Black Sails?

He's done really good work on GoT.

You guys need to get off your high horses. Writing is cheesy as shite and I don't connect with some of the actors

Starz is a second rate channel compared to hbo and Showtime and doesn't have near the budget and it shows.

They also get the second run of actors and it shows

It's not horrible but I read 20+ reviews from critics and most agreed with me. It has a 54 on megacritic and that's not very good

Meh. You are on a high horse. It's on fricking starz! No shite it's not going to be fricking Soprano's, but it was entertaining and prolly on of the few shows I will make time to watch, based on the first episode.

Easiest way to search him without him being suspicious.

Critics don't have a clue what i like to watch, therefor i give them no consideration on if i like something or not.

that said, I have it DVR'd and will be watching when i get home from Virginia Thursday night.

As a Patrick Obrian worshiper, I am a total sucker for any high-seas naval action from this era. I was pumped to watch this.

So we get one naval battle, with most of the screen time spent on some guys hiding in a storeroom. Yeah yeah budget, I know.

It's the usual mediocre Starz level of quality. Gratuitous silly sex scene, preposterous stilted dialogue, etc. The script is actually better than Spartacus (seems written by high school creative writing students rather than the middle schoolers of Spartacus.)

The captain and quartermaster were really good, but the acting overall didnt impress me.

I will watch it because I LOVE this genre, and the hunting the spanish galleon plot line is intriguing. I too hope they just get on with him finding the schedule page so the hunt can commence. Frick that stupid phony cook. Let him dangle from a yard.

well go watch the Pilot of Sopranos. It was pretty bad, the acting, the writing, the score.
