Is "Thug" the new N-word?

According to Richard Sherman, calling someone a "thug" is the same as calling someone a ni##er but acceptable.
Does he have a point?

Jeff Duncan is drunk again.... great

Most people I refer to as "thugs" are white actually
Maybe it's my subliminal word for whi**er. But more than likely it just refers to a piece of shite, regardless of race

if it's acceptable, then by definition it isn't the same

That was my first reaction.

I've worked with teachers who have been formally reprimanded for calling students "thugs."

I was walking out of Quik Trip today, and by the time I got to my car I heard two different people say the n-word. Both are black. How can they act like the word is so toxic, when they're addicted to it?
As for Sherman playing the race card, what's new? During the 2012 presidential election, I recall several words being equated to the n-word, including Chicago and Monday.
Richard Sherman can take his race card and shove it. I hope Peyton makes him his bitch.

It definitely carries racial overtones. When a white player gets in trouble off the field, there are always "tPOS" jokes--and those jokes are based on the fact that the "thug" label isn't thrown out as quickly as it is when the player is black.

Like somebody said earlier, Bieber is a thug. I actually think a better word for him is punk, but that's just me.

Good for you. You're consistent.
But some people throw out the term "thug" more quickly for black perps.

i agree but i see "thug" as a term that describes urban/ghetto culture, which is dominated by black people
just like we use redneck/white trash/hick to describe rural lower class behavior that is dominated by white people
sherman sounded like a WWE wrestler, not a thug. a bunch of white trash probably called him a thug
i use ratchet now, b/c that's the new urban term to describe ghetto/trashy

Good points

Also a good point. Worst thing about it is that people will remember his WWE performance more than the actual play.

Sherman has a degree from Stanford, right? As far as I know, he's never been in trouble. He's not a thug.
Here's my take on what happened regarding that interview. Anybody who has played football at any level knows that emotion is a big part of the game. That goes double for defensive players. Throw in the fact that this was an NFC Conference title game, and it was the biggest game most of these Seattle players had ever experienced.
So, Sherman and Crabtree are going at each other for 3 hours. Trash talking, etc, and it sounds like they don't like each other, anyway. A little altercation right after the game is over, and then, suddenly, Sherman is talking to Erin Andrews on national television.
He's still hyped up from everything, so he goes off on Crabtree. The tv audience isn't thinking about any of the stuff that has him sitting on dead red, so it just comes off as some football player acting like a fool, scaring the crap out of Erin Andrews, etc.
It did look bad, because there was a total disconnect between what Sherman had just experienced and what the audience was expecting from that interview.
I hope he doesn't do it anymore, though. I don't care what color he is; it just doesn't play well.
