I run too much to get jacked easily. I also think I don't have the genes to get big easily because I've been working out consistently for years and haven't put on more than 20 lbs. Maybe I'm not eating enough?

I haven't lifted more than 3 days a week in many years
The 5 or 6 days I was lifting was generally one body part at a time, and I tried to space out workouts that worked out similar body parts. Like, I wouldn't work bi's one day then back the next...I'd work chest, or legs in between.

I'm not saying its cheating. when I was younger I took it. I have no desire to take it now.

You were not. Everyone gains weight when they eat enough. I would also cut out cardio altogether if getting swole is what you really want to do.

Not an option

I have never been a bodybuilder so, outside of a few years when I was in my early 20s, I am not a big fan of split routines. I also do very little accessory work, like biceps, and not every week. I might hit 4 sets of curls at the end of my Friday workout if I feel like it. I do Tri's pretty hard because they are a direct bench accessory.

I can add 20lbs to my frame within a month. Without noticable fat increase(visual)

yes but you are tall and thin naturally . at 5'7" there is nowhere for fat to hide on me

Yep....my goals have def changed. Right now I just do it to half-arse stay in shape.

Trick question. OTers are always swole.

so mostly/all compounds?
Absolutely. I know we have had this discussion here before but I will make the point again. The split routine that most people get from bodybuilding magazines is horrible for the average person. A simple 5x5 that employs bench, squat, deadlift, rows, and pushpress is all most people ever need to do. Do it two or three days a week, while eating, and you will be much stronger and much more "ripped" thn your buddies that have an "arm day" and a "back day".

Why is the 5x5 better for the avg person?

Any beginning program that focuses on compound lifts will be far better. Those programs are better because they incorporate the large muscle groups as well as ancillary muscles that are recruited to aid in the lifts, they provide the lifter with a program to follow and the weight to be lifted on each exercise, they require the lifter to increase poundages and provide the schedule to do so, they have the lifter use the queen of lifting, the squat, 3 or more times per week. Do the compounds and do them often and you will get big and strong. If you waste a day doing curls and lat pulldowns you will do more harm than good.

I'm digging what you are saying and I have really enjoyed the 5x5. i did it for a few weeks at the end of summer but then quit for half-marathon training; injured my heel running and have been out and re-started 5x5 SL on Jan 1–3 days a week. I really love the workouts and want to stick with it for 12 weeks and see how I do.

Haven't looked into 5x5 at all. And I know the primary focus of this thread is to get "swole". Bigger and stronger. But what about cutting up? Simply burning body fat, maintaining LBM or adding some, while getting stronger?
I'm asking as someone who isn't fat, lifts at least 4 times a week, and I lift heavy and hard. Little rest and keep my hear rate up.
Just looking to change things up a bit

I've been lifting for two years now and I'm still not "jacked." My BMR is 4500 calories... so I have to eat 6000+ cal a day just to gain a lb or two a month.
I am, however, ripped as frick. That will have to do until my metabolism slows down a bit.
