Question for upper elementary school teachers

Is it ever appropriate for a teacher to "celebrate" that a student isn't in the classroom for whatever reason??
Daughter (7th grade, Catholic school NOT that this matters) is in TAG ... she was at the program when the teacher checked roll. Teacher asked "where is she?". Fellow students said "TAG". Teacher replies with "YES!!!" and an arm motion to indicate such.
Daughter is a model student ... never a problem and all I've ever received is positive comments from teachers and other faculty members.
She's by no means boo hooing about it but she did tell me that a dozen of her class mates told her this. It's more of she doesn't understand what she did "wrong" to cause a teacher to do this.
My thinking is that SURE some kids get on your nerves, rub you the wrong way, piss you off ... whatever. BUT this should be a "thought in your head" in my opinion ... not something said in front of the classmates.
So, I ask, teachers, is this in any way appropriate? (And no my panties aren't in a wad either ...)

Might have been the teacher's idea of a misguided joke. Or the friends are lying.
ETA: And when I was in 8th grade my teacher HATED me because my mom thought she was a shitty teacher (my mom taught at a different school) and told her so. That was a fun year.

maybe the students are lying because they don't like your daughter

No ... not a sex predator thread ...
I actually asked one of the friends ... she confirmed ... I could call 10 more but this one has no reason to lie.
I've heard for years that this teacher has a "habit" of this (my own child told me she'd heard it done by her) but as my child wasn't involved I stayed out of it.
Just wondering how education professionals see this ...
eta: the friend I did speak with is her best friend for years. They're pretty much like sisters.

Inappropriate yes. Had a teacher that just didn't like my son. Good life lesson time. Probably more upsetting to you than her?? or at least it was to my son.

Oh I agree it's a life lesson ... my daughter is pretty soft hearted and we let her work things out for herself though. Figure that'll get her father in life than anything else.
Was truly just wondering if I'm the oddball for thinking it's inappropriate.

Your kid is annoying, sorry. And if she is annoying, the other kids know it without the teacher having to tell them.

Talented and Gifted program ... it's held 1 day per week at a different school for 4 hours class time.

I am sure your kid is a good student, mine by all accounts is also. Teachers are human, don't forget. Maybe jealous of her, or doesn't like you or your wife, or maybe (as in my case) my son was better at sports than her son and that bothered her.
You can always put her picture of the fark board and let people go to town on her.

Maybe the teacher was happy for your daughter for getting in to the gifted program?

Edited because I thought you were the dad.

I know Geaux ... I just see it as unprofessional. That's all. My child is no worse for the wear ...
And I'm the mom ... and the funny thing is this teacher calls my husband EVERY TIME to play music when there is a school mass.
Anyway ...

typically they're the trouble makers and they try too hard to fit in because they're socially awkward

WDE don't make me choke while I'm laughing ... he's a GREAT husband but on the super duper laid back side. A shame I know.

Email the teacher, copy it to the principal and ask why she was so excited that your daughter wasn't there.
