Ya, I haven't done any of those applications where they do everything short of implanting a chip. We just sort of got in the line then acted cool once we realized where we were.
I'm debating succumbing to 1984 after how nice that was

By the way, I'd like to tip my cap to you. I just finished booking accommodations for a trip to DC and NYC that the lady and I will be taking next week. We will be staying with friends some of the time, but decided to splurge a bit and pick up hotels for a few nights. Two open jaws from BR to DC, NYC to BR, one night on Capitol Hill, two nights in Manhattan (both Hyatt), and two Amtrak tickets between the two cities, and not a dollar was spent out of pocket.
You aren't the only resource I've used in learning the CC game, but you made the foundational research much easier to digest, and far less intimidating in general

I just got approved for Amex gold delta, 50k bonus miles which should put me right at 110k miles now after I put 1000$ on it.
10k spending limit, I was worried about my credit from some stupid mistakes out of college but surprisingly score is not bad.

In 13 months If you ever fly with anyone in the continental U.S., upgrade to the platinum version. You'll get a free pass for a companion once a year. Worth the extra $100 fee to me.

Will avg credit score of all 3 unions around 720 get me the platinum? Yea I have a wife and kid and we fly back to BR and Port city few times a year.

Due to Dodd-Frank a credit card company cannot increase your annual fee in the first 13 months - even at your request.
You will have 0 problem getting them to upgrade you after your year with the card
(call them at 11months and sometimes they can finagle you into the platinum early and just don't charge your new annual fee for two more months)

I am trying to figure out if it makes sense at all for me to get a delta amex....
I am silver elite right now on Delta, will most likely hit gold by the end of year and could maybe hit platinum if I bought the amex delta platinum and got the mileage boost. The problem is that I a)already own the amex premier gold rewards card and that b)think that the delta amex platinum really only makes sense if you have a full year of spend and hit the spending boost.
I guess my questions would be shoulkd I cancel my gold and upgrade to the delta amex platinum? and should I wait until next year to do so?

I just read thru this whole thread yesterday and tonight. Just wanted to say thanks! This thread is awesome and lots of information was cool to read.
Not ready to get into this type of stuff, but def has me setting goals to start applying for points cards at the beginning of next year.

How did you go about it? Flying a lot or some other tip that you can share with the class?

The easiest way is getting both the personal and business versions when their bonuses are at 50,000. Since those both take 2,000 in spend to get to, you'll have 104,000 points with needing only 6k to go to get to 110,000, which is the companion pass threshold.
You cannot reach this threshold by transferring in points from Chase UR.

But you can transfer points to Hyatt from UR at a 1:1. Then from Hyatt to SW at about a 2:1 and those will count towards SW companion pass.
Obviously not a great way to go about it, but can do if you need to hit it ASAP.

Exactly what Teddy said.
Now I have around 120k RR points to play around with.
They are offering the Chase SW 50k bonus again right now. You would need to sign up for the business and personal card to get 100k. However, you may want to wait until the beginning of next year to get the most out of the Companion Pass. If you earn the pass on 1/2/14 or 12/31/14, you still only get to use it until the end of the next calendar year (12/31/15).
Hope that helps, I can answer other questions if needed.

Teddy, I've got a credit card question. Less than a month ago I applied and got the Chase Freedom Visa card with the terms that if I spend $500 in the first 3 months, I'll get $100 back. This is the 3rd week I have had the card and I noticed that they are now offering $200 cash back for $500 spent in the first 3 months. Is there anyway I can negotiate the $200 cash back deal although I signed up when they were offering $100?
I was pretty excited to know I would get $100 back, but since I noticed they are offering $200 I've been fairly grumpy
