I was never a fan of Hal, and liked John Stewart a whole lot more.

Yeah, but this is a movie based on a comic series. Not a movie based on an animated show that's based on a comic. Also you have to have a reason for Stewart to inherit the ring. The thing is the DCU is The Green Lantern Corps' universe and everyone else is living in it... and the Flash can frick it up at anytime.
