When you are down 3 with the ball...

You don't necessarily just take a TD... There's 1:18 to go take a knee at the 1. First and goal get to run the clock out completely 3 shots at the end zone with a good running game and zero, chance FSU gets the ball back in regulation...
I don't understand why this isn't even considered in football ( dont misunderstand Im glad auburn choked). But numbers wise the chance of a TD on 1st and 1 after running off 30 seconds minimum is a lot greater than the chance of giving up a game losing TD w 1:20 to go and TOs

Happened in the Oregon State - Oregon game as well.

You are down. You can't just expect points.
The state of Alabama has proven they can't consistently score field goals.
And what if you have a fumble or a bad snap?

Agreed. But I fumbled on a QB sneak in NCAA for Xbox once after using this strategy, and I was furious.

And Auburn wasnt on the goal line when they scored. They were on the 37 yard line. And their kicker missed a 30+yard field goal earlier. Mason made a great run and got in the end zone. Then they went ahead by 4. Which meant FSU had to score a TD. Just so happens that they did.

I think its an old rule of thumb that you always take a TD whenever it presents itself - this was probably a very good rule 50 years ago when scoring was harder to come by - but I think this game in particular illustrates why its not always the best idea now. If Auburn had just kneeled at the 2 they could have burned off another 30 seconds - and then maybe more depending on how long they took to get into the endzone - and worse case you take an easy field goal to go into OT.

yeah, but there is no guarantee for a TD either. Play for a tie instead though? PUSSY shite!
especially this year. Nothing was safe.
I mean look at what happened in the iron bowl, HELLLLLLLOOOOOOOOO!

No, worst case is you miss the field goal.

How often do you fumble a snap 1% of the time. I guarantee you a team scoring 30+ points a game with 2 TOs and the clock stops on 1st downs has a 25% shot or more at getting a TD. I'd take my chances running down the clock and trusting my offense can get 1 yard in 3 plays. If there's a penalty and i have to take a 4th down chpshot for OT and that guarantees the offense won't get the ball then im playing the percentages
Dont be ignorant and blankety say when you are losing you take the points. If your down 1 and you take that TD its beyond stupid

#1 Priority is always to score.
You never not score when the opportunity is there.

As far as missing a fg. How often is an xp missed ? We're talking about something auburn never missed all year an extra point versus something they did multiple times all season giving up a TD in 1:20
Fumbling could happen but whats the percentage chance i fumble?
You are forgetting there is absolutely a chance FSU scores w 1:20 Scoring to go ahead doesnt mean you will win. It means you will win if you stop them. Which isn't always the case. I'd say 95% of teams are more likely to score a TD on 1st and goal as compared to letting a team score w 1:20 to go

Don't be an idiot and act like points are easy to come by.
You don't tempt fate. You tell your defense to man up.

Seems like your "logic" could be used both ways. If nothing was safe, then why give the ball back to the Heisman winner?

Even less than 1% of the time does a player run a missed FG for a 100 TD...but it happens.

Believe it or not, scoring doesn't always do that, though it did in this example tonight.
