It left me with mixed feelings regarding Marcus Luttrell, but I should read his book before forming an opinion of the guy.

Can't really without spoiling, but his vote put the team in the position they ended up in.

Well, I mean I'd rather not considering spoilers. Suffice to say, the team gets into a hairy situation and I didn't particularly like Luttrell's (the way he's portrayed in the film) priorities (hypothetical media coverage vs. a real threat to his team's safety). The team leader is ultimately responsible for what happened that day, but Luttrell was more worried about a potential damaging CNN report than he was the very real threat to his team's safety. And the team paid for it.

Spoilers!!! Maybe..?
They didn't take a vote. The captain decided. (Michael Murphy??) although he did voice his opinion.

Lieutenant Mike Murphy made the call as team leader, but it was clear that 2 of the SEALs felt one way, Murphy I think could have gone either way, but Luttrell basically bitched so much that I think he tipped the scales as far as what Murphy decided to do.

Don't think any of us can act like what we would have done in that situation. Talking about peoples lives here.

I think maybe you're looking at this from the wrong perspective. Luttrell is the only person telling this story. There are no other witnesses so he could have portrayed the discussion about what to do any way he wanted. He knows most people will conclude that they made the wrong decision. He's clearly defending Murphy's decision. I have more respect for him that he is backing Murphy and supporting the unpopular decision that will forever be second-guessed. That being said, I also found it very strange that he would be concerned about how it would look on CNN (at least according to the Hollywood script). The rules of engagement and their judgment on how to survive a compromised situation are the only things he should have been concerned about. The dialog in that scene did cover all the bases, and he chose to not hang Murphy out to dry by making it look like the sentiment was 3 vs 1 to eliminate the compromise.

No, I'm in no way judging him or his actions and have said in multiple threads that I need to check out his book so that I can get the full picture. I am willing to say that whatever his scruples with the R.O.E. I can't understand how the thought of a possible bad CNN story worried him, and dictated his actions, more than the very imminent threat posed by the ~150-200 Taliban fighters just south of his position.

It wasn't a "bad cnn story" it was possibly being prosecuted for war crimes or having the entire op picked apart and them being courtmartialed.

It was a "bad CNN story." I caught his remarks about soldiers going to prison for taking trophy rifles and crap, but the point is if you turn them loose and they give away your position and you're vastly outnumbered then you won't have to worry about CNN, prison, court-martials, or anything else because you're probably not making it off that mountain alive. And guess what happened?
Even if they didn't want to take them out they could have left them tied up but Luttrell was against that too.

Why didn't they keep them captive until they could make contact with the base?
I watched the movie but haven't read the book or anything

Yeah the part where they didn't just tie them up and keep them there with them didn't make sense.
Also it wasn't really 100-200 people. More like 10-40 (still a big disadvantage though)

According to the Laws of Armed Conflict, those captives absolutely could not be killed and have it justified in any way. They couldn't be killed prior to them being detained and they absolutely could not kill them after they were captive.
His whole issue with the CNN story was that they can't just leave the bodies and pretend like nothing happened so that way they don't get punished. The bodies would be found, the Taliban would most definitely publicize it, and the murders would be traced back to them resulting in prison time.
The other issue is that the whole SOF mission in Afghanistan is eliminating the terrorist threat by eliminating local support. Think how far back all of the good things we do there get set when individuals break the law and murder civilians. Even if they are not completely innocent, they are not posing a direct threat and therefore cannot be touched

Bingo! And like someone else said, unfortunately the only perspective we have is from one person. Who knows how the compromise was truly debated, but even with hindsight being 20/20, they made the right decision based on everything you said. And this situation was/is already a case study based on the British Bravo2-0 guys who faced basically the same situation during ODS. At the time of their debate, there were a million reasons why they couldn't kill the goat herders. The whole CNN argument was just punctuation on what happens for violating the ROE. It wasn't like that was the sole argument. Just one of many reasons on top of "why we shouldn't do this!"

According to the movie they had walkie talkies that they assumed were to the Taliban. I think they Would have gone looking if they had not made it back in a reasonable time.
All in all, LT made a reasonable decision based on the given. It was a no win situation.
