we were on the south side off the island close to Spanish town...the airport was a nightmare for everyone, visitors and locals alike.

There are a few of them I hate.
Phoenix for me was TERRIBLE. I flew in on United and was flying out on US Airways. I had to get on an actual bus to change terminals. I was so turned around at what I was supposed to be doing that I almost missed my flight.

Memphis is terrible, takes forever to walk from one terminal to another and no transportation other than a few moving sidewalks

There was one worse than that we went to at the foot of the andes but the name escapes me. Crashed planes are pushed off to the side of the run way and left. Control tower/passenger lobby was a tar paper shack. We sat under armed guard waiting on the weather to clear. Chickens running all over.
Believe me KC is a gem compared to Iquitos and most other airports in Peru.

People who think Atlanta is terrible haven't been through many airports. Rio is one of the worst ones I have been through and I have the pleasure of going through it every 28 days. Customs is a PIA, it's hot and the food places suck. The hotel is a dump. The gates won't open until 7.
The absolute worst I've been through is Dammam Saudi Arabia. But I wouldn't expect much out of an airport in the middle of the desert.
A few nice ones are, Japan, Seoul and Johannesburg.
