It's more popular than ever, especially with fantasy football.
However, it is becoming more watered down. If it continues on that path I could see people not caring about it as much anymore.
It might die out down the road, but not any time soon.

I suppose there may be a semi-vaild point in there somewhere, but it's surely not this:
quote:
Including end zones, a football field is 120 yards long and 53 yards wide, giving it a playing-surface area of 8,242,560 square inches. Eight million-plus square inches is far too much space for its participants to cover, both literally and thematically. It’s strategic schemes are simultaneously far too broad and far too intricate, and thus there is far too much required of the fan to accommodate the sport’s advancements.

This - at its current pace, football only has 2 issues to overcome:
Player health/safety
60-inch TVs

Those aren't exactly easy issues to solve though

I don't like the NFL as much as I used to, but I still watch.

I heard on Rush Limbaugh that black quarterbacks are ruining the sport of football*

This is a guy in favor of baseball, and we hear many say baseball is dying. This is just a smart-arse response to those saying baseball is a dying sport, although that is true.

It's true that baseball is dying?

It is interesting that the packers have playoff tickets still for sale and with the exception of the Rose Bowl yesterday there were a lot of empty seats at bowl games.
But football and baseball are different games and hold different places in our society and history. I would honestly say that 50 years from now I could see baseball maintaining its popularity while football may be a question mark. Baseball seems to have greater survivability versus football. It's physically less dangerous than football and unlike Football it is the national pastime in places like Cuba, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and Japan and very very popular in Canada, South Korea, and Taiwan. Football can't claim that.
Boxing and horse racing aren't as popular as they used to be and there's nothing about football that says it has to always be the most popular sport in the country.

I think it is a lot less popular than it was, it's certainly not gaining popularity right now.
The Mcgwire/Sosa home run chase was the last time I can recall baseball being truly exciting. With all of the PEDs, it has taken a lot away from the game. Baseball is also just not enjoyable to watch on tv in my opinion. I can go to an actual game and enjoy it, but watching on tv is awful. I also think there are way too many games.

TV ratings are down but attendance and revenues from TV and marketing and merchandise are growing.
Baseball attendance has grown the last ten years.

Honestly, my only dislike of football is the increasing prima donna attitudes with a lot of the players.
Constant hold-outs, complaints that they aren't paid enough, people like AP calling themselves "modern day salves"....
shite like that almost makes you happy when you see one of em get destroyed on a crossing route.

Definitely not, but they exist and are threats to the NFL's world domination going forward.
They are being proactive in regards to play safety - they are also working on making the gameday experience more like your own living room

Baseball is definitely gaining in popularity now. Revenues are way up. National ratings are down, but local ratings are going up. Individual teams are signing multi-billion dollar television deals.
It's almost universally rated as the second most popular sport in polls, behind the NFL and ahead of college football.

you know that was written tongue in cheek right?
It's a parody of writers who use this same tired trope with baseball every year.

I think it's great they're being so proactive towards player safety, but it's impossible to make a contact sport like football completely safe, especially with the physical monsters in the NFL
And the gameday experience is slowly improving, but there are some things they can't avoid...traffic, travel time, etc. Not to mention $10 beers on top of the already expensive ticket prices
