2014 Saints Salary Information

Let's start talking about next season for a minute. I know there is a big important game Saturday night but this is an issue I wouldn't mind us starting to talk about today, contracts.
The Saints are in a tight spot when it comes to money so I put a spreadsheet together for all of us to look at. I made sure to include the big contracts and important players.
Who should we cut? How can we sign JG for life? Will we have to redo Drew's contract? Etc...
(Highlighted names are FA in 2014 and their contract no longer has an effect on the Saints salary cap)

I'm sure we cut ties with Brown(especially if Armstead works out) , Smith , Vilma and hopefully Harper and Jenkins

Players to cut that will save us money:
Will Smith
Darren Sproles
Patrick Robinson
Players to Keep:
Khiry Robinson (This guy can replace Sproles for a 1/10th of the cost)

Sproles is Brees buddy they won't let him go. I'm anxious to see what kind of players RR can bring in this coming year. I feel the defense will get better and better with him here

True but that doesn't matter if we can't free up cash to sign anyone else. I like Sproles but he is no longer worth the cash he is being paid, imo. He is getting older and is going to cost us more money each year as he declines in production. The time is now to replace him. He was a great player for us but we won a Super Bowl without him and we can do it again.

Give Will Smith's money to Graham.

Draft De'Anthony and I'll be happy with cutting ties with Sproles.

We have some bad contracts in there. Not much room for flexibility, as cutting most of these guys would be worse than keeping them.
Cutting Harper would be idiotic. His cap figure next year is $5.9 mil against the cap, but it will be $5.3 mil if we cut him. That's saving $600k, but having an empty roster spot to fill.
Cuttin PRob doesn't seem to help much either, so I can't see us doing that.
Cutting Smith is a no-brainer. That's adding $10 mil in cap space, which should be enough to use on Graham.
As for the FAs on that list:
Vilma - gone
Brown - gone
DLP - probably gone
Jenkins - resigned if cheap enough
Strief - resigned
Graham - $$$

The problem with that is that, as of now, we are -8 million in the red. So even if we don't resign any of the FA, that only frees up 8 or 9 million total by cutting Will Smith. We need to cut Sproles too.

I believe that Mickey will make this work.

Hopefully Will Smith does the right thing and walks away quietly.
Don't forget, Jordan is in a contract year next season too.

will the nfl raise the cap number any time in the near future....
and say harper gets cut would the number that would count against the salary cap next season carry over to 2016 since that's when his contract expires....

The numbers that I put in the column that states what it will cost us to cut them should be divided over the remaining years on their contract. Most players have the same numbers each year except for a few that have a different structure.
If we cut Roman Harper, we lost 1.76 Million a year for the next three years. So that wouldn't be a good move since that would become dead money on the roster.

Either P. Thomas or Sproles has got to go. They are both expensive veterans that can be replaced. We have Robinson. Isn't Ingram a FA?
Cost wise, Thomas needs to be here, he is a beast. Sproles is replaceable with Khiry Robinson.
Ingram will be back for two more years

If so, we might get enough of a bump to clear all the money we owe, which is around 8-9 million right now.

Between JG and Cam Jordan, they better figure it out because Cameron Jordan is an anchor on the D-Line for years to come

Agreed, I was confused by which column was which. We NEED Ingram to step up (in the playoffs and next year).
