I read through page 6. I am really interested in buying a few traps and attempting to catch bobcat, fox, and coyote. Is there any threads with step by step information on how to set and how to bait? I know I have seen gland lures, but do you bait with meat as well? I seen in a post that you put the bait in a hole and cover it with sheep's wool, is this right?

It's pretty easy you make a 3 inch diameter hole at a 45 degree angle away from where you are going to place your trap
Loosen up the dirt where you are going to place your trap I like putting mine 11 inches to the hole from the center of the trap
Now you want place your blocking and cover your trap. Try to make your trap covering look as natural as you can. I put about a teaspoon full of commercial bait in the hole and a little gland scent on that log on this one. I don't use sheep wool I have in the past but just to put under my trigger. I just use insulation now. If you look at the pic above you can see the insulation under the trigger that allows you to sift dirt over the trap.
Smoke makes his own bait. I have been buying all mine this year. This is what I have caught the most off of LINK

what does this do for you?

With the angle the more he digs he had to keep stepping up giving you a greater chance of a catch. If the hole was straight down he could sit in one spot and dig your bait out.

Awesome info. Thanks so much! What do you use to dig the hole (I'm worried about scent here)?
Also, I think I have #2 traps, is that adequate for yotes or do I need to get something bigger?

I'll take pics of what I use later today but its a dirt hole punch. As far trap size #2 should be good enough for anything you are going to find down there.

the trap is over the hole or next to it?
there is a guy that traps 'yotes on some property i have. he puts bait (usually a skunk or skunk tail) under some loose dirt with a trap above with it all in a shallow depression.

It's hard to see but the hole is in the crook of that log I edited that pic above so it might help a little more

Got tired of wearing out batteries, plus its a hell of alot easier to carry. And I went with a 1.5 inch hole this year.

So is the angle of the hole pointing towards the trap or away from the trap?

5 rats and a possum this morning. Got some more land sets out yesterday so hopefully I'll have more to report soon.
I'll try to post pics to help understand the dirt hole thing a little later. Life is just crazy this time of year.

man i used to love trapping.. even more so than hunting. I still have probably 45 steel traps hanging in my shed. Nothing like walking up on a yote early in the morning with his foot snagged its just so much work... became more of a hassle than anything when i was by myself

In response to an earlier post, I said that I would show what I use to punch my holes. A piece of pipe cut at 45 and a small window cut out to remove dirt. Hammer it in and when you pull it out you have a perfect dirt hole.
I didn't get a picture of the whole process, I'll try to do that soon, but this might help. You can see where I punched my dirt hole. I then dug a hole for my trap. Once properly staked and bedded pack dirt around the outside of the jaws. You can get an idea on spacing hopefully.
Once thats done I'll put peat moss over the trap and in the jaws. After that I'll sift natural duff/ dirt over the trap. I didn't get a pic of that sorry. I'll try and do a tutorial soon on various types of trapping.
