And contrary to popular opinion no government will attempt to do so. There is no such thing as a hiring quota....it is simply a myth akin to a unicorn.....
There are government run programs that mandate minority and women owned businesses be hired.

Government should stay totally out of private businesses. Should not have any say in who is hired/fired.
If a company wants to hire/fire based on race/religion/etc instead of hiring the best workers, then they're only hurting themselves. But if the government is requiring them to hire/fire based on race/etc then that's doing the exact same thing and also hurting the company.
The real "racists" are the ones who believe minorities can't get hired on their own merit and need all these special treatments so they can survive.

Why would a company that is going to fire someone over race or gender hire that person in the first place?
If they hired a woman and it turned into a man?
Seriously, we spent 2 weeks on this topic in Business Ethics in college... course taught by a woman that was about to have an addadicktome.

Sure.
Hiring or firing any employee based strictly on race or gender would be a very bad business decision. If allowed to run their course, these things have a funny way of working themselves out.

No. A disgruntled employee can cause irreparable damage to a company.
Also, if a person is being fired for being a bad worker (whatever the reason), why should the business be made to suffer by having this person around longer and why should the worker be rewarded with additional time on the job?

What a bunch f prejudiced people here. I absolutely do not worship the private enterprise bull crap that any body has a right to discriminate. You can't hire or fire based on religion, race, sex, sexual orientation or any other protected class. You all should be ashamed.

Yes, employers should be allowed to fire anyone for anything.
Absolutely.
It would be pretty stupid to fire a productive employee though unless you had really good reasons to do so.

Hey Roger been a while. Yes it would be silly to fire a productive employee. But if my boss showed up next week and said you are doing a great job, but sorry no while people in the office so bye bye, something is wrong with that.

I consider it morally reprehensible for anyone to predicate hiring or firing decisions based on any of the things you listed.
However...
I also consider it morally reprehensible for anyone to use violence, or threats of violence, to force individuals to associate with people they don't want to associate with.
So, in short, I would like for you to tell me why you think that aggressive violence is more moral than prejudice.

Native corporations are allowed to hire native preference. They'll fire a white guy if a qualified native comes into play. I am fine with that.

As a former NCAA coach, a non-revenue sport, I was never considered for many jobs because I was a white male.
Title IX is in fact something you should be ashamed of because it requires hiring based on race and gender.
Edit: You ashamed of the bullshite that is Title IX? Anybody? I bet not.

I'm not saying I agree with it, but a person should be allowed to run their business the way they see fit. If they make terrible decisions(like firing based on race, religion, sex, etc..) which run their business into the ground...so be it. Like I said, if allowed to, these things have a way of working themselves out without outside intervention.
Besides, who decides why the person was fired? Couldn't the business owner just make up any excuse they wanted? Wouldn't it result in charges that a person was fired based on X(race, sex, etc) when really it was a result of them being a terrible employee?

No I am saying that religious and racial discrimination is not allowed in 2013/2014 society. Yes he could can me because he doesn't like the way I manage the business. But if he says we only hire those of African descent or sorry no Jews thats just wrong.
That is one step from segregation and we don't serve your kind here. The Civil Rights Act banned all this 50 years ago. Sorry Rand.

JB, I advocate individual rights and property rights. If you think I'm prejudiced, I can live with that. Personally I do not advocate firing because of race, gender, political beliefs, etc. But, think it's your right to run your business the way you see fit.

Yes and I wouldn't limit it to race and gender. Companies should be able to hire and fire over:
Hair color
Weight
Tit size
Bama Fans
Regional Accents
Tattoos
Age
Marital Status
Religion
If I discriminate to the extent that the public becomes annoyed then I will suffer by market forces.

I agree people need to be able to run their businesses as they see fit to a degree. I cannot see an employer being allowed to fire someone because they are gay, black, Muslim etc. Never thought of you as a prejudiced sort (Sorry if it came out that way)
However I stand by firing anyone wearing a Red Sox or Bama shirt.

Why didn't you answer my question? It was a short, simple one: I would like for you to tell me why you think that aggressive violence is more moral than prejudice.

It's called prejudice. White drinking fountains?
LSU and Ole Miss and Bama segregated. Wallace and Ross Barnett called this freedom too.
We reserve the right not to serve Negroes and no Irish near apply not to mention we don't take Jews is so 1950s. Well unless you are a Bama frat.
