I just got a Cisco DPC3825 DOCSIS 3.0 from Cox, but it doesn't reach to the ends of my house
this is the same wireless router I was renting from Cox.
This new SBG6580 Motorola has way more range and is faster than that Cisco.

Bump to see if someone can answer my question, want to solve this today.

My modem is a 2.0 and it's been cutting out a lot lately, especially on the phones. The wifi signal will disappear and I'll realize I've been using data a bunch. Will getting a 3.0 modem fix this or is that a router issue?

its funny when people talk about tech but really don't know what the hell they are talking about. fiber means nothing if you are not using fiber equipment. my coax DOCSIS 3.0 smokes what you have over "fiber"

its a router issue. your wifi signal will have nothing to do with the actual modem unless you have an all in one.

you will most likely have issues. motorola modems on Cox's network don't hold up well. the cisco modems are the best that work with their system. just get a regular cisco modem from them and use a separate router.

Wow, where do you get that from? For over 10 years, I've always heard exactly the opposite, that Motorola equipment is the best, from modems to tuning adapters for HTPCs. I do agree with the comment about using a separate router, though. I've only ever had Motorola equipment, and it has "held up" perfectly. The only problems have been on Cox's end, from noise originating way upstream from me to their practice of oversubscribing the nodes. The latter was a regular problem for 10 years, and it has been solved completely for the last three years since I bought my Motorola SB6120 D3 modem.

My house was struck by lightning a few months back and blew out my cox modem (one integrated with phone service). It was a Cisco modem 3212. Just prior to this I had finally got my wifi working fantastic, reaching throughout the house and was very pleased. Router is separate, Netgear WNR2000.

I replaced the Modem with a Moto SB6141 to get off Cox rent and try to take advantage of 3.0. It seems to be okay, but the overall range/speed is terrible. I can pick up a signal, but the speed is slow. Sitting right next to it, it's fine.

iPhone 5 Results
Wifi very near router: 27d/7u
Living Room 20ft away: 3d/.1u
Hardwired Computer: 32d/8u

Should I try switching back to the Cisco Modem? Will it make a difference? I'm a bit nervous also because it was replaced by Cox, but they have never charged me and I haven't returned it. However, I'd gladly pay if this fixes my issues.

How much?

I'm currently renting from Cox, and I planned on buying it or another modem depending on how well it worked.

I already have a ubiquiti airrouter, and I believe I can use that in conjunction with the Cisco modem/router to cover my whole house, but I'm not 100% sure.

I tried googling that junk and I get lost in the terminology.

So if I can buy the Cisco one incurred have and run with that, that is what I'd like to do, especially since I had previously purchased the router.

i just bought the all in one router/modem.
The SBG6141 is the same modem just without the wireless.

If I can use what I currently have to throw internet throughout my house, that's what I'd like to do, I'll just pay cox for the modem/router I'm currently using. And use my other router in unison with the one from cox.

you're paying them $9.00 a month. You'd have your own paid off in 6 months.

Do they keep charging me after it's "paid off?" I'm willing to be they will because they never have any indication that they would stop charging me once the amount of the router was reached in rent.

I need to call them today anyway because those MFs still have come bury the cable line.

Right, so I may as well buy it and not give cox any more money than I have to.

ETA I've only had it for a month so I don't have much wasted on renting at this point.

Please don't rent it from Cox. It is so much cheaper to just buy one off Amazon.

All you have to do is call Cox and give them the new serial number and such, so they know what is hooked up on your end.

correct. They rent that shite out to the type of people that use the check cashing place instead of banks.

I didn't want to buy it if I would not have been able to use it like I wanted. One months rent is noting to make sure it'll do what I want it to. I just needed to make sure before I spent the $150 on it, only to find out I needed to spend it on something else.
