The funniest thing was Saban being shocked LSU had a list of other coaches
I thought so too. Like he didn't expect any proactive response.
Two other thoughts :
1. Thank God they didn't go with his recommendation.
2. I wonder how pissed off the Bama admins are with him letting Sexton flirt with Texas for months.

As good as LSU was at he time it is surprising that the best candidates that they could come up with were an inexperienced Jimbo, a liar in Petrino, a loon in Houston Nutt, and a miserable failure iat Michigan state in Bobby Williams.
Really is eye opening when we want to fire our current coach every other game.

Nutt was Sabans hand picked successor. But Skip and the committee were not impressed.

Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer were Bertman’s top choices, he admits, but they were taken.
Spurrier had just returned to the college game at South Carolina, and Meyer had recently been hired at Florida. LSU was starting its search late.
“Nick put us in a tough spot,” Weems said.
If LSU got into the mix before South Carolina, “We could have had Spurrier,” one committee member said.
This is how I remember that as well. After the shock resided that Saban was finally going to leave after flirting with the NFL every winter, the reality that Spurrier had been hired by South Carolina after having been turned down by Florida who had gone with Urban. rumor was that Florida's AD essentially hated Spurrier and wanted The Ole Ball Coach to come in and interview for a job he had become a legend at, and he told him to go frick himself. Had Saban left a bit earlier, The Visor would have broken his ankles running to Baton Rouge to stick it to Florida yearly. Instead, Nick lingered and South Carolina became the place Spurrier landed.
I also remember fearing the LSU AD would take Saban's not so secretive advice and hire Houston Nutt.
As it turns out, given who was available, it may well go down as the most important hire at LSU. LSU hadn't been back long enough to have made a shitty hire and go back in the tank there. Without the solid hire that Miles has turned out to be, all the work Saban had put in may have been for naught.

Those wishing a coaching search on LSU when we are having success like never before are retarded.

Saban suggested Nutt for no other reason than he was throwing a bone for another Sexton client.

I hate how most news stories can't write their shite in cronological order. Instead they bounce around the timeline like a pinball machine.

That was pretty distracting, bouncing back a forth.
The sheer arrogance of Saban shows thru here. He was stunned they actually had list of replacements.

Wow. Can you imagine picking up the phone and hearing a former President on the line with a recommendation for your next coach? Unbelievable.

That quote should settle the ardor of all of the Saban lovers out there. Nick only cares about Nick and the very thought that LSU might be shopping around for his inevitable replacement was a bruise to his ego. In his mind it was ok to look around for another job, but shocking that LSU would want to replace him.
What an arrogant arsehole.

Les is fine, but I would like to have had LSU to hire the old ball coach!

Good stuff. Hopefully this will quell the "FIRE MILES RABBLE RABBLE" noise when people start to understand the toll a coaching search takes on a program and the massive amounts of uncertainty that comes with one. We are goddam lucky to have a Les.

Not that it would have any effect on that mindless bunch, but look at the trouble Texas is having. Talk about a program that "sells itself", Texas is rich in money and tradition, has super facilities, sits on the middle of more first rounders than you can shake a stick at and they are still searching for a new coach.
Mack was under some heat beore the season began and you know that their BOS had a list that included more than Saban. Where are they now?

or UF, UT, UA (before Saban went there), etc...
The only homerun hire I can think of is if you can get someone who has been an HC at another major school and done the deal (Spurrier to SCar, Meyer to tOSU, Saban to UA). Those are extremely rare. We are fortunate.
