Rivals.com team ranking criteria

I am not a big fan of rivals.com or their star ranking inconsistenices, but I do visit their site from time to time just to see how we are doing compared to other teams.
My first question is why is everyone referring to our new commitment -Clifton Garrett- as a 5 star prospect but Rivals only has him listed as a 4 star?
My second question has to do with the average category. Based on this category, LSU has the third highest star average at 3.69 with only 16 players committed at this time yet we are ranked 12th overall. I believe our quality places us firmly in the top 5 which can only improve as we get closer to January 2, 2014.
This was just an observation intended to get a better explanation from those on this board who have more details on this subject.
Thanks and Merry Christmas/Happy New Year to the entire Tiger Nation. A special thanks to Scott at Dandydon.com who is very deserving of our support for his coverage of LSU sports for these many years.

everyone uses 247 now, and on 247, they have composite star rankings, and he is a composite 5*

You'll probably catch hell for not putting this on the recruiting board.

Probably, but if somebody wants to make a big deal out of it they don't have to respond.

Most of the major recruiting services have him as a 5 star, Rivals just happens to be one that does not. Also, don't get too caught up in Rivals "star" ranking, as they have him as the Nation's No. 3 OLB and his grade is pretty high. Those things are more important that stars.
