Which come to think of it, they're basically kissing cousins.
They are technically first cousins, roughly 50 times removed. Elrond's twin brother was Elros, who chose to be human and became the first king of Numenor and lived for 500 years. Aragorn is a direct descendant of Elros. I do not recall how many thousands of years and generations there were between Elros and Aragorn, but it was a lot.

About 6,431 years.
Give or take.

Whats expected to happen in the 3rd installment?
Gandalf gets freed somehow, Smaug gets slain, the battle of Elves/Dwarves/Orcs at the end along with flashing between Gandalf and co. Battling Sauron I guess?
Just seems like not much meat to stretch into 3 hours.
Gandalf gets freed. About 15 minutes.
Smaug attacks the city and is slain. About 30 minutes.
Word gets out that Smaug is dead, about 15 minutes.
Elves, Orcs, Dwarves, and Humans all decide that a shite ton of gold and precious jewels/etc. is worth going to war over. About 45 minutes.
Armies mass, and the battle commences. About 15 minutes.
Battle continues, the Eagles join in. It becomes a battle of five armies. About 20 minutes.
Battle wraps up, including an epic one on one battle scene. About 15 minutes.
Aftermath of battle, people begin returning home. About 20 minutes.
Bilbo spends some time in the Shire, talking to other Hobbits. Young Frodo and Samwise are introduced. About 20 minutes.
Some Sauron stuff to tie it into TLOTR. About 10 minutes.
All in: 3 hours 25 minutes

Beren and Luthien
Probably my favorite Middle-earth tale. Turin Turambar a close second.
Favorite after LOTR obviously

Question
Isn't Balin from The Hobbit the same one that was found in the tomb as "Lord of Moria" during The fellowship of the ring?
Anyone think that they will try to cover Balin and the dwarves returning to Moria at the end of the next one?

Yes.

It's possible that they mention it. I doubt they delve too deep into that part of the story.

Saw DoS again today, but in IMAX. Enjoyed it even more the second time.

Finally saw it.
Same beefs I had with the first one. Ridiculous over the top cartoonish fighting.
Yes, Legolas did a few crazy moves in LOTR but now EVERY move is over the top. Every battle is a CIRQUE DU SOLEIL act.
I didn't mind the barrels until the freaking barrel landed on the ground and out come arms and legs and barrel monster attacks.
Don't give me the same crap rebuttal you gave me for the last movie that this is a kids story. Tell that to the 15 beheaded orcs.
For the group that hated all the prancing about in LOTR, this movie had about a solid hour of nothing but walking, running, landscape shots but when you stretch a 300 page book to 10 hours, I guess you need lots and lots of padding.
I won't even get into the inexplicable nonsensical love story crammed into the already overly long movie. Just met you and spent 2 minutes with you but I now love you and will defy my king to chase after you.
Having said that, I didn't hate the movie but I didn't like this one any more than the first.
Smaug was well done. I wish I could say the same for the acting. I did not like Beorn or Bard.

Yes he was. Another fun fact: I was watching the special features from An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition, and they were talking About all of the dwarves & the Mines of Moria scene. Ori is the one that Is holding the book that Gandalf reads out of..

Beorn was my only disappointment
agreed. he's supposed to be a much bigger man (think Hagrid) without a stupid ridiculous haircut/fumanchu beard and he's not all grim and hate filled.
Also we didn't get to see him kick any arse.

Yeah he definitely got more love in the book and I also didn't have him pictured as a werewolf lookalike. I understand them not being introduced to his house 2 X 2 like in the book because it was similar to how the dwarves introduced themselves to Bilbo but you're right they had his character wrong.
He didn't trust dwarves but he wasn't so spiteful of them I think, not to mention if they really did approach his house like they did in the movie the book Beorn would've killed them.

Yeah we'll see how that goes.
Spoilers for Movie #3!!!
The way the book goes they stay in Erebor and only Balin ever comes to visit Bilbo and then I suppose he goes off to Moria, not sure how many join him, I know Gimli's dad didn't considering he was in the Council of Elrond in LOTR. I agree though. It would be cool to give a shout out to some of them going to Moria like the shout out to Gimli.

Just saw this last night.
Smaug was PERFECT. Couldn't have portrayed him any better.
But other than that... Lets just say the Battle of the 5 armies better be worth waiting another year for...

As for the big fight in the next movie, this may be the first time someone has an excuse to let a bear go fricking insane on people/orcs. That'll be odd to watch.

Definitely liked it overall. Many scenes that drug out well past necessary. Some great imagery and intense scenes.

Just saw it, was pretty good. I felt it ran a little long.
The dragon was really well done.

my big complaint over the top, long, fight scenes.
When an elf kills orcs at a rate of 1 orc every 2 secs, and does it in a near perfect way, for minutes on end.....
yawn
I find myself waiting for the end of the fight scene
wheres the drama?

I am not a LOTR guy, I haven't seen any of the movies or read the books, but I thought this movie was great!

Enjoyed it. As said many times they run a little long but would rather that than run to short.

Got to wonder why the Elves got their asses handed to them at Helm's Deep.
Heck, they should have easily won Helm's deep if they fought even half as good as Leggy and his GF.
