Actually, the 357 Magnum you already have will suit your current needs just fine. OTOH, I'd never discourage someone from getting another gun, especially if it gives his parents a chance to "show their love."

I'd take care of your current needs w/ a full size semi-auto; if you someday decide to conceal carry, get a smaller, lighter, single stack semi-auto at that time. I'd suggest your parents buy you a DAO or striker fired, full size M&P, XD/XDM, SR9, Sig or Glock. If you're comfortable w/ the SAO platform, a 1911 in 45 ACP is always a fine choice. Shoot and handle as many different of the aforementioned guns you can and see which one(s) suit you best.
