we doing a little christmas shopping.. it is near closing time, choupique II wants to try a new echo and rnt.. so we are by the duck calls....

he hits the rnt a little.. nice work.....

then on the echo(as usually happens for him).. he sings like an english calling mallard....

a rather well known and fairly famous duck hunter(you have seen him in videos).. pulls up a chair and listens while he continues to "test the call"... puts it down says.. yeah. I want this one....

ole boy. winks and nods.. gets up goes back to whatever he was doing.....

not happy happy happy well known.. but pretty dog gone close...

funny part.. back when cabellas first opened.. guy behind the counter wouldn't let a very young choupique "test" the good calls....

another poster on here asked for call gave it to him... the jaw dropping from the kid behind the counter once he started calling was priceless...

Good story

Who taught him to call so well?

me and a guy that used to guide with/for me.

I was fortunate when he was very young that I was in a position to take him in blinds on guided hunts and let him call - he was too young to shoot much, but called pretty much 100% of the calling we did by the time he was 6 or 7.

He also spent countless hours talking with and calling with our guides two of whom really looked after him a lot when I was occupied.

and I also sacrificed a lot of hunts/shots that were very good teaching hunts....

he also got some very good pointers from Eli Haydel, Phil Robertson, and Jase(when he was really young)... actually left him in their booths at outdoor events and he called with them - whilst I walked around...

it is very frustrating to be in a blind close to him.... in fact.. first weekend we hunted a new place - guy from next blind over came over to us during hunt.. asked me if it was ME doing that calling.... cuz we called a bunch off of him... I said no it was him.......pointing to choupique II.. not as funny when same thing happened 3 years ago.. because now he doesn't look anywhere NEAR his age.

And the duck hunting section is almost the worst, coming in a distant 3rd to the bullet isle and used gun rack.

I have been teaching my daughter to blow a call. She is only 3 but actually can make it sound like a duck which I am happy with right now.

Thats awesome man.

I did the exact opposite and I am paying for it now...

I always had my pow pow and uncle (who won worlds in 96) in the blind calling for me while I shot. Never felt the need to learn because they wanted me shooting. Now I can barely hold a tune at 26...

yeah.. one of the guys that taught me how to hunt and call.. never taught either one of his boys...

I hired his eldest sight unseen - and was stunned that he couldn't even blow a whistle.. nobody he hunted with ever let him...

Mine has been offered by some custom manufactures to call for them - he chooses not too.(he does have a few plaques and trophies)..

it's really funny when we go on guided hunts or hunt with new folks.. and he starts calling....

whats really impressive is when people say you can't call in woodies or mottled ducks...

I don't mind it when there are normal duck hunters in there. Whenever I go there are a whole bunch of the "I duck hunt because it's cool" crowd spitting up the RNT's though. If you can't call, don't call in cabelas, and damn sure don't do it on an RNT.

I made my buddy a believer one day when I told him I could get some woodies to circle like mallards and they did and came straight in. He was shocked
