Did we recruit well in the 90s?

I didn't really follow recruiting in the 90s. It wasn't as big of a business then. But people have said that LSU has always had a fence around Louisiana for recruiting. Was that true in the 90s? It's hard for me to believe that we were able to recruit some of the best players in the nation and still go 4-7, 3-8.

No. A lot of NFL players that overlooked LSU. Their coaches in the 90's were incompetent And Joe Dean had issues as AD.

Some that DiNardo signed had grade issues and never played.

Watching a big game in the 90's , say between Nebraska and Colorado, or Miami and Florida State was the most frustrating thing ever. Their rosters were loaded with elite players from Louisiana. And there were some really unfortunate negative caricatures of LSU out there, specifically in New Orleans, which at several prominent schools were extremely Anti-LSU.
It's night and day different.

Yea, I heard Joe Dean did walk in his sleep in his pajamas the wrong way down Coursey. Come to think of it we were a very mediocre, boring football program with bone head coaches that exemplified the highest form mediocrity. One was even named after one of the 3 stooges.

Some definite studs got away. Some were never ours (Mannings). Some didn't pan out. A few big names I can remember- we lost Ernie Badeaux to Florida and "settled for" Anthony McFarland. Badeaux didn't do shite and McFarland went #15 in the draft. Josh Booty was a bust. 91 saw us sign the best 3 rb's "ever", only to see none really reach potential. Robert Davis from Al, Robert Toomer from Ga, Artie Moore from Ms. Eric Jefferson DE from Evangel went to Illinois and then to Prison. Other big missed names off the top of my head- Cole Pittman, Talman Gardner, Jamie Spencer, Anthony Thomas, Robert Hammond, Thomas Pittman, Demetric Evans, Terrell Bierra, Robert Peace, Johnathan Wade, Ike Hilliard, Shannon Brown, Anthony Lucas, Travis minor, johnathan wells, Kordell Stewart, Roydell Williams, Bennie Gilbeaux, Arnaz Battle. I know you guys know more.

Denardo was in the top ten every year in recruiting !
In fact he was winning and the tigers were improving until he fired his very good DC and hired Lou tipper .
Who played soft zone and no pressure D . Big ten football

Dinardo made it a point to go to pretty much every HS in the state right after he got hired to build relationships and start building that fence. he was Colorado's OC for much of the 80s (and they had some good NO-area players at the time), so I think he knew the importance of recruiting New Orleans from jump. Archer and Curley, not so much.
it was a process that Dinardo went thru, but he was getting a good number of the high profile La kids by the time he was fired. he left Saban with a good number of NFL players from the state (Ryan Clark, Jarvis Green, Trev Faulk, Bradie James, etc.)

Jay Johnson from Tx and David Butler from LA, along with the ones you mentioned, gave us the supposed top RB's from 5 states.
Chris Howard, Mich, Jonathon Wells, Ohio St, Sean Jackson, FSU, Shannon Clavelle, Colo are a few more...
Booty is maybe the only All-SEC QB to ever be considered a bust. Just goes to show how much was expected of him.

Got kicked off UF's team and ended up at Nicholls. What a waste of talent. "Booger" sure did work out for us

Criminy, Higgins! Did u teach Evelyn Woods reading courses or something? Pretty good recall my man. But don't forget that we DID (yes we did) get the the kid from Florida (the no. 1 linemen and recruit in the nation), Chris Pettaway. What a memory!
