Will the defensive light "get turned on" Saturday?

I refuse to believe that:
1. John Chavis forgot how to coach defense since the end of last season.
2. Our recruiting efforts were a complete whif pretty much across the defensive side of the ball, and we recruited guys that can't play.
3. Everyone we've played to date matches up well against us, thus, our d has been easy to move the ball against.
On the offensive side, at some point between the end of last year and start of this one, Cam comes in, light comes on, boom, prolific offense.
We've heard a lot of talk about communication (or the lack thereof), especially in the secondary.
I would love it if THIS game is THE game in which that light comes on. This defense has a chance to redeem itself for what has heretofore been a mediocre showing (by LSU standards). Alabama is no offensive juggernaut. Would LOVE to see these guys step up!

I think it does but it will be too late. Bama wins by 10.

The bottom line is this, and it is pretty simple:
This defense is SOFT.
Period.
They are weak, can't shed blocks, can't tackle consistently, take poor angles, and get pushed off the LOS.
If they showed some toughness at any point of the season, I would think we have a chance. They have not and will not. Just a soft, weak group.
Sorry.

Our LBs are bad, everyone else is young.
That's the story.

on the whole? no, I think that happens next yr.
hoping that Tre and RR have gotten some extra work during the bye and show some improvement. if Chavis trusts them a bit more to cover, pass rush could be more effective.

For some reason, LSU's down lineman this year don't get off their blocks and make the tackle on the runner through their gap.
For some reason, LSU's LBs this year are usually late filling the gap.
For some reason, LSU's safties are late in their coverages. Loston is usually lost or late on every play.
This year, I expect Saban to stuff the ball down LSU's throat with the run; should be ugly for Tiger fans.

This. I cannot get over people thinking that the defense will suddenly do a 180 for this game. We are what we are. I'm still hoping for a good game.

Except Kwon Alexander. He's been our best defensive player this year IMO.

they looked plenty tough against UF, in a game where UF was definitely trying to out-tough them. of course UF is trash on offense, but the D looked fired up to be there. they got into the backfield on running plays, they rushed the passer, they looked like they wanted to avenge the physical whipping UF gave em in the 2nd half of the 2012 game. I think we see similar intensity (if not the same result).

Partly right. I don't buy the "young" excuse. Johson, Ego, Rasco and Allen have all been in the program for at least 3 years. Loston is a 5th yr Sr. and Martin is a Jr. Mills started or played every game last year and 9 this year. Youth isn't the issue.
The LB's aren't great, but the biggest difference in this LSU defense when compared to those in the past is along the D-line. Simply put, this D-line isn't anywhere close to previous d-line groups. IMO the bulk of the problems start with them. When you can't rush the passer, nor stop the run up front, the backers and DBs are going to struggle as a result.
This is game 10. If it was going to happen, the light would have come on by now. If LSU wants to be successful on defense Sat. they're going to have to take some risks, even if that means leaving some guys in difficult one-on-one situations.

The rant says nay.
But trust me, they all hope they're wrong.

Completely agree with this. Whoever said "we are what we are" is also right; thus, we'll need to take some chances.
Still though, for the life of me, I can't figure out how our defense got to this state. I mean Chavis knows what he's doing. He's fielded great defenses. That side of the ball is filled with some highly recruited talent.
PS - Florida's offense MUST be horrific, because our defense did look pretty good against them.

Chavis knows how to coach, however, there isn't much he can do with the guys he has now. They simply haven't panned out the way they were suppose to.

I think it is more about lack of experience this year rather than a mental thing. So no, the light won't get turned on in my opinion. The defense is going to be a whoollleee lot better next year. Especially if the middle decides to come back.
