It was too weird for some people. And I don't believe Nic Cage is a big box office draw. It's too bad because Nic Cage is the best leading man fit for Werner Herzog since Klaus Kinski.

not now of course, but back in 2009 he was still a big draw for the most part. about 8 months before this film he was in "Knowing" that did over $183M on a $50M budget.

i was thinking this was some shite remake. it was good?? ive got to check it out if it's a herzog flick

It was a combination of a slim release (both timeframe and theater spread), and marketing from marketers that had no idea how to market it (say that 5 times fast).

Herzog doesn't really aim for money, studios know that, so I think everyone is cool with the reception.

This. Several scenes were awkward and hard to watch due to the over-the-top ridiculousness.
