Haven't read the book, but having parts of your team's bodies paralyzed seems to parallel the sacrifice of part of the fleet in order to achieve the larger goal of getting to the other team's gate/the alien home world.

How good is the IMAX for this? I would imagine certain scenes are incredible, but I'm debating whether or not to opt for the regular showing.

I understand this in an abstract way, but I was always hoping it was something specific to the way the buggers fought. It was such a focal point of the way Ender fought I hoped it was something more than a lesson in fighting while injured or thinking outside the box.

Consider how casualty adverse our society is with the current wars in the Middle East. The problem with war is that casualties are not just a side effect but a necessity. You have to be willing as a commander to risk the lives of your troops if you want to achieve the overall objective. If you are afraid to do that you get bogged down in a quagmire like we have done in Iraq/Afghanistan. Would Ender have been willing to sacrifice the transports if he knew thousands of people were really dying?

I haven't read the book in 5 or 6 years. But, I really liked the movie. My only complaint is that a lot of it felt very rushed. Or, is the book rushed too?

Probably just the effect of condensing a book into a below 2 hours movie.

They did rush it quite a bit. However, with rushing it, the movie was still about 2 hours. I would of showed how he established the friendships a little more and as someone said earlier, they didn't show his griefing side as much as I feel was needed to really show his character. The fact that Peter got about 5 lines in the movie was interesting... Reminded me of what they did in Eragon movie by completely cutting a whole subplot.

The book didn't feel rushed at all despite being really short. And the book takes place over like 4 years or so.

Could easily been split up into 2 movies but it was still very good.
I read where card said he would never let them do a movie out of " the speaker of the dead".
I'm wondering if they will go back and do the first formic wars trilogy as a prequel to enders game or if they will go on to a sequel instead.

Yeah 2 movies would have been best. The first for Battke School and the house on the lake, ending with him flying off to Command School. The second being the Demosthenes/Locke storyline and Command School.

I saw it in IMAX and thought it was incredible. I don't think you would miss anything by seeing it at a regular showing though. IMAX 3D would have been better.

It looked great on the normal screen. Nothing like Gravity where you have to see it in IMAX to appreciate it

Meh. The bulk of the book is battle school. I haven't seen the movie yet, but the entire part of command school was quick. I don't think you've got enough to do two movies

quote:I agree with this. The problem is that you can't express some of the finer aspects of the book through live action. That is to be expected with movies based on books though.

I started re-reading the book last night after watching the movie yesterday. I'll be able to form a better reader's opinion in a few days when I finish.

It's certainly no "Delivery Man".

Visuals were great and they executed the battle room very well. If you read the book and expect it to resemble the movie closely, you will be disappointed. Graff was very one dimensional, which was disappointing.
There was no sense of time - he says he's burnt out and tired of competing, but it feels like he's only been there a week to the viewer. For child actors, they did a pretty good job.
Independently of the book, the movie would be a 6 or 7/10. As an adaptation of the book, it very much misses the mark for a 3/10.

In the theater now. Hope the movie is better than the 20 minute wait to get a drink.
1 woman in front of me and she argued over the price for almost 20 minutes.

I wouldn't try to compare any movie to such a lofty standard.
