Should still be traveling in the 1600fps range at 200 yards so I guess it's "doable". Can't say I've ever heard anyone encourage such behavior though.

I find it funny that we have 2 guys that are willing to enter a death match over a caliber that is better than some but not as good as many when it comes to deer hunting.

I consider it a public service.

i actually just found a used one for $350 that has a scope with it...it has some rust on the barrel but very good condition of the wood...
this is the model
i have heard about issues with the ejection port being on top vice on the side in other brands...
think it is a good buy? I hav enever had a lever action but want one real bad...i looked at the Marlin 336 but that bitch is a heavy gun...and it is $100 dollars more with no scope...

I also believe it has a lot to do with the cowboys shooting the native Americans with 30-30's. It hurts my heart every time I see one.

The cartridge is wonderful from 75 to 150 yards - after that, it loses some of its wonder.
The lever platform is disadvantaged in a stand because its strengths (light weight and "swingability") are minimized, whereas the bolt guns are practically born to be fired from a stand. Couple that with the "standard" bolt gun calibers, .270, .30-06, .308, and the more esoteric .300 Win, 7mm, the Weatherbys, etc., all have greater range and most have more punch, particularly past 100 to 150 yards.
The platforms and calibers have different purposes and should be judged appropriately. It should be a positive that a trained shooter can perhaps take longer shots and harvest deer with a .30-30 - we shouldn't knock the platform by saying it is a poor choice for deer at 200 yards or more because that's like saying a 9mm pistol is a poor choice for rabbit at 75 yards.

That's what he gets for not reading your sig quote.

I think the only public service you are qualified for involves blue trash carts at 4am... You haven't come up with one solid reason why 200yds is beyond a .30-30 these days except your outdated opinion. Sad state of hunting when there are folks like you running around.

Your opinion is obsolete but I think it's cute you have it...

With the new Hornady 160 gr LEVERevolution ammo, I see no reason you couldn't reliably take 200-250 yd shots. I think it is optimal under 150 yds, but certainly someone familiar with their gun could easily feel comfortable out to that range.
That being said, you would be pretty foolish to purchase a .30-30 to specifically use in a stand that routinely has shots out to 300 yds when numerous better rounds are available at that distance.
As for the decline in prevalence, I think that has to do more with it being seen as an antiquated round more than anything.

Hard to waste much effort on you. Kinda like watch that fat kid in the group of trick-or-treaters struggling to keep up.
