I generally open my eyes and look. Now I do have somewhat better than 20/20 vision but it's still not difficult to see something like that at only 300 yds.

Why would I want to shoot a 30/30 when I could choose so many other's. I don't wake up in am and say hummmm let me take this slow arse cartridge into the woods today so I can limit myself to 100yards

Do you limit yourself with a bow, or are you strictly a bazooka hunter?

Mother fricking this and it's 300m. Which we remember from school house rock as a little more than a yard.

Hitting a target and killing a deer are not the same.

I'd like to see somebody who could consistently kill a deer at 300 yards with iron sights in a hunting situation. Pick any rifle. Deer move, blend in, your rest sucks, ect.

Steel green man targets don't move, stand out, and you're shooting prone with a nice AR.

I bow hunt during bow season. I'll be the first one to admit that bow hunting is hard as shite and I use a compound bow. God Bless the folks who shoot trad! It would be like me picking a compounf bow that only shot 10 yards vs 30. I just don't see the need. If you want a challenge then bow hunt or black powder and not the new black powder as they have more range than the 30/30 unless your using the lever evolution rounds.

Nobody said it was.

Probably a few out there that have the skill but they sure don't post on this board.

Well the targets are pop-ups on a timed system and sure as hell don't stand out very well on your average range and the AR's you are issued in basic are far from nice... The standard table is prone supported, prone unsupported, and then kneeling.

I've got an article 15 for head shot on doe at 275 meters in Oct of 89 at fort Leonard wood with iron sights. What else you want from me? It did take two rounds fwiw, high and outside on first. Had a LaBorde from marksville spotting for me.

Dude, if you can't get within a hundred yards of a deer, you suck as a hunter. No amount of marksmanship can make up for that. If you would try a little harder in the woods a regular thirty-thirty without special handloads would be all you need.
If you caint get close, use a real rifle like a 270, the awesomest rifle known to man. Use the right tool for the job; don't try to hot rod a vega.

I didn't know the .30-30 was around for injun blasting. I thought they mostly used stuff like .44-40

Back to the meat of this topic, the .30-30 doesn't make much sense as a 150+ yard deer caliber.

You can get a soft recoiling rifle that will be much more well suited for the job and you'll be able to get ammo from walmart to do it. The only thing the .30-30 has going for it over other calibers is that it is chambered in very handy rifles and it has a rich history. If it wasn't chambered in marlin 336, I'd never own one, and neither would a wholeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee lot of people who do.

Hornady squishy tips are not good bullets. I've yet to see one do what it was supposed to do in .30-30, .35 rem, .444, .357, or .45-70. I see a whole lot of shot deer every year and pay attention to stuff like this. The only people I know still using them are .45-70 and .444 handi rifle shooters, and most of them are unhappy with them.

Hornady squishy tips shouldn't be used at any range. They suck. That said, I don't think any .30-30 load should be used at 200+ yards for a multitude of reasons...

1) Most people shouldn't be taking 200 yard shots with any caliber, much less one that lobs bullets rather than sends them on a rope.

2) Most factory loads are pop gun loads and don't bring much with them past 100 yards. The trajectory and velocity both suffer big time due to the flat/round nose of most bullets. The hornady squishys address this, but they don't do their job when they get where they're going.

3) (looking for trajectory charts)

The man speaks the truth. Much like the OB's beloved Judge, the Hornady rounds are great marketing ploy. Fact is, they don't carry the velocity to carry much advantage over a good handloaded soft point. Their advantage rests in the fact that most factory ammo is down loaded to be safe in the older rifles they are intended to be used in. But still, they just can't reach the velocities needed to take advantage of the bullet design. Even if they did, Hornady really has a dismal reputation when it comes to bullet performance. Hey, but they do have really cool plastic tips!

Never said I couldn't but I bet you sitting up in a stand covered in doe piss with 300lbs of corn scattered doesn't make you much of a hunter either....

Hornady is great at making bullets that fail in all kind of bad ways. And people use that stuff for self defense

One thing I will say is that they usually shoot very well. Every gun I own likes hornady ammo.

Late 1890's? Google can answer it for sure. I mean, I'm sure there were some whiskied up red skins shot with one, but Custer wasn't packing one in his saddle scabbard.

I must say, however, the ole dirty thirty has killed more deer then blue tongue and chevys combined.

I only use corn in Arkansas (never in MS), and I don't use doe piss since the unfortunate incident between my cousin and the coyotes.
