To behonest, I've never had much desire to play any of the ones before VII. Not sure why. I really liked VII and IX was pretty good as well.

VI is hands down the best in the series and one of the greatest games ever made.

I felt the same way, but lots of people on here recommended FF6, so I gave it a shot and loved it.
So I think its worth it for you to at least give the old classics a try first.
