What to Make of the Pelicans
quote:
The exhibition season doesn’t mean a thing … does it? What are we to make of the New Orleans Pelicans? Are they any good?
Steve Aschburner, NBA.com: As the late, great Tony Montana said, “Fly, Pelican. Fly!” But I see this as more of a “try Pelicans, try” season.
quote:
Scott Howard-Cooper, NBA.com: Yes. I don’t think playoff good, but no one should be surprised at the obvious signs of progress. Anthony Davis could still turn out to be the best player from the 2013 draft,

I just added that same quote. I saw the article and posted before reading, so I hadn't seen that yet. That dude is smoking something funny.

What's wrong with that?

Umm.. he wasn't the ROY, so not sure why its strange for someone to say that..

so you have to win ROY in order to have a chance to be the best player in the draft?

ROY was such a fluke though, per36 and even PER davis is the better player.

I'm not defending it and I know Davis is the better player. But that is a national story and everybody else in the nation isn't as obsessed with Davis as we are. Lillard won it in a landslide and there is a notion, nationally, that Davis wasn't as good as he was supposed to be. So a writer saying, that he could or will end up being the better player isn't a stupid or crazy thing to say. It makes sense..

Not really. There is a notion that Monty's restrictions on Davis kept him out of the discussion. There may be a few misinformed people who think he underperformed, but the majority of national writers see it for what it is.

I get what you mean. I'm just saying nationally they're all on the damian train because he's given the reigns on that team and forced to do more whereas we didn't ask much of AD and had him progress slowly. No one pays attention to that though, they rather look at the stats (well every stat other than PER)

I see what you're saying but AD was hurt and Monty admittedly held him back last year. Lillard's a fine player but he's 3 years older and played 4 years of college ball. As the 6th pick, he was supposed to win ROY. AD has HOF potential.

Lillard deserved to win it. But I think any national NBA writer worth his title knows that Davis is the better player.

But they aren't writing for other sports writers to read. They are trying to tell the public something they might not know. If there is a national perception that Davis wasn't as good as he should have been or someone had a better year, I like that the writers are pumping up Davis and drawing attention to him. I'm not going to mock the guy for it. He's doing us a favor and putting the league fans on notice. I think that is pretty cool.

He isn't even a "star" yet, and you are saying he has HOF potential?
Star potential - yes. But let him play through several seasons before you start saying he has HOF potential...

He isn't even a star player yet.
He's shown flashes that he has the potential to be a star player in the NBA.
He'd then have to continue playing fantastic basketball for several years before you can say he has HOF potential.
Any talk of HOF potential now is just extremely generous wishful thinking.
