Waiting for price drops and used copies of new games?

Does anyone here have experience with holding out on new games until there are significant price drops or a plethora of cheap used copies on the market?
I opted out of spending the $65 for GTA V at launch, as priorities and budgets have shifted since leaving college. My thought was to wait and get a cheap used copy around Christmas, as I am already seeing used copies go for $44 on Amazon.
My expectation is that GTA V will have a huge used copy market in several months, as many teenagers become bored with the game. Does the game experience take a hit, especially online, for games that are picked up later in their life cycle?
I am accustomed to rushing out and getting the new games and playing them to death, but I can't drop that kind of money on games anymore. Does anyone else do this?

Did you find the multiplayer experience was lacking due to less players on-line?
I picked up BF3 multiplayer again recently, and just kind of feel a lack of excitement in the games. Less people are chatting, less teamwork. You don't see large clans online together as much anymore.

it will this time, because of the new consoles coming out
once everyone switched to xbone or ps4, GTAV online won't be near as popular, but there will still be some players

Not a big MP guy but most people are prepping for BF4 so bf3 is at the end of it's life.

I just find it hard to drop $65 on a video game these days. My thought was I could get GTA V for $29.99 a few months after launch, probably around Christmas time.
Do you see these kinds of prices for used games, or are you still looking at $40 for the game?

I bought it at SAMs for 54 on release day
I'm sure it'll be cheap on Black Friday considering the age of the game at that point, if you want to hold out

Maybe $40 but who knows. Gamestop will sell it to you for $55 probably

Does the competition get any less intense? I like playing online, but I don't play enough to get good and nobody likes being target practice every game.

GTA V will buck the trend of online player count dipping (imo). In relation to the amount of next gen console pre-orders, GTA V has sold many more copies because everyone has a current gen console. Only enthusiasts get the new ones at launch, so I forsee a lot of people sticking with current gen and GTA since it is the latest and greatest title.

I buy all of my games this way, but then again I don't play online much.

I ignore MP mostly, I so wait it out and only buy day one if it'll have limited stock, limited edition, or it's a immediate must play.

I hate your theory bc i was also hoping current gen game prices would plummet
