I have never once watched that show and even come close to considering Ted's political affiliation.
He's definitely a tool...by design though.

She's aging OK for a redhead. She obviously hasn't been fanatic about protecting her skin from the sun.
It's funny that he's supposed to be the main character—thus you would expect the actor to be the star, but the actor is the least successful and least famous of the cast outside of the show. I don't think most people even know the actor's name. I can't think of it offhand.
