There's a recent book on spending a year embedded with both Phish and Insane Clown Posse fans. It's amazing how much they are alike, once you strip away the rituals. It's tribalism.

I don't think that's a bad thing, BTW. Music is one of the major identifiers in the high school parking lot. It's more personal than other forms of art. What we listen to says a lot about who we are.

There are "tribes" for every successful band though. I listen to the music that I do because I like the music, not because I want to be part of a club.

Two of the best. Cheese has more variety and better vocals. Bisco has nastier jamz though.

No doubt. but almost every band has that.

I'm probably one of the few that listens to Phish for the music created in the studio. Billy Breathes, Junta, Hoist. Maybe it's b/c I started listening to them while they were relatively small and lesser known and never toured down south that much. People say you have to experience them live to get them. No, no you dont' b/c I personally think their improvisational skills are lacking and muddled or at least I think that from their earlier days. I saw them in '96 and it was good but they didnt' sound great. Sounding great was the Allman Bros the next day and I'm not a huge fan. Since then, I hate most phish fans and that's why I typically avoid the burt/heady threads.

Oh and Parrot Heads are the worst!

My roommates love Jimmy Buffet. I like him ok I guess but I usually only listen to him on the beach when I'm with a crowd of people.

To this day, I still think that was the best outdoor show I've been to and all they did was play their music.

I'm dying to see them. I love Warren Haynes and my mind may explode if I ever get to see him play a whole set with Trucks.

Well, of course they are different. They attract a totally different audience. but the reasons behind it are surprisingly similar.

And of course very band has an element of tribalism. I readily conceded that already. It's just far more explicit and overt in Phish and ICP's case. And yes, Parrot Heads are the worst.

I may have to read that just from the title.
