Hey guys,
We've had problems w/ raccoons stealing our dog's food for a couple years. Didn't want to disturb neighbors w/ gun fire so we live trapped them. My son caught 15-20 raccoons the first 1 1/2 years. Recently, coon problem recurred, but we were unsuccessful trapping. I decided to put an end to the offending raccoons, once and for all.

The dog starts backing heavily when the coons show up. I tried to stalk the coons a few nights, using his barking to alert me of their presence, but was unsuccessful. I decided to ambush them. I felt I had a good idea of what time they were feeding. I set a honey bun out for bait, about 15 yds from the dog pen. I sat in a children's tree house overlooking the bait and the dog pen. I'd been on stand about 15 minutes when the dog went crazy w/ barking a growling. I put the green flashlight on the dog pen and saw a large coon coming down the inside of the dog pen fence. Once he got to the ground and moved away from the dog, I found an open spot in the fence and shot. I hit hem, but he crawled up the fence to the top. A second shot ended the hunt. The Winchester 22LR "Subsonic HP's" worked find. The green flashlight and pressure switch did well.

I've monitored the dog pen a few more nights but haven't seen another coon.

Nice. I usually just chase them off the porch with a broom.

How'd he eat? That looks like a good young one, them older ones can get a little tough.

We snare them all the time down at the ranch, this was last weekend. Didn't work out so well for the coon

You can use a silencer on "nuisance quadrupeds" in Louisiana.

I had a nice and truthful response typed out and it was nothing but truth. But, we're in the middle of football season and I guess I want to continue to keep posting, so I back spaced over it....
Now I feel like an old shriveled puss....

You really meant "A" good raccoon hunt. I was expecting to see a pic of 10 or so and a dog who'd sent them up a tree.

We have always used 22 shorts in an old Marlin model 60. Sometimes it would cycle but most of the time we would have to manually load and eject. Worked great for coon hunting in the neighborhoods when I was younger. We would shine the trees till we saw the eyes, turn the light off, then creep up to the tree. Once we were ready, we would turn the light back on and pop them between the eyes before they turned their head away or put their, creepy way too human, hands in front of their face. Was very effective and got us a better price for the coon and the hide. This was many years ago in Texas where a sharp crack from a .22 short would not even raise an eyebrow from the neighbors.
