You couldn't have just edited the other thread?

He applied and interviewed to replace Arnsbarger.
LSU hired from within and kept Archer.

people think they know things about coaching searches and candidates. they don't. pretty much nothing you read on the boards or the media is true. unless it comes from belowpar.

Yes, pre-FL.
Spurrier had been HC in the USFL thru '85. When Arnsparger left after only 3 (successful) seasons in '86, Spurrier wanted the job. As a previos poster mentioned, we hired Archer (DB coach under Arnsparger) from within. Archer lasted 4 seasons. Arnsparger subsequently took the UF AD job and hired Spurrier at UF in '90. Over the next 12 seasons we went 1-11 vs UF.
My guess is that even had Spurrier came here, he would have left for UF in '90. However, he would have left a very strong program here instead of the bog left by Archer.
ETA: corrected Spurrier's pre '86 coaching experience per H-Town Tiger's sternly worded (and correct) rebuke.

If Miles left after this season and your choices were promote John Chavis or hire David Cutcliffe, what would you do?

If I remember right the story goes that Spurrier interviewed then went out to eat with some supporters in the same restaurant that another candidate and supporters were in at the same time. This didn't sit very well with Spurrier. Apparently he still wanted the job. I do remember that the entire team showed up at a BOS meeting and were pushing for Archer to be hired. This influenced the board and they eventually settled on Archer.

Stop It!!!!!!!!!!! Chavis does NOT want to be a head coach. He could have already been a head coach at multiple places if that's what he wanted.
Chavis is a DC and wants to be a DC.
The End!

This is how it happened! Coach Arnsbarger was a good coach that hated recruiting. So Florida needed a new AD. When Spurrier applied. old Bill says, hire Archer. He is the best thing since apple pie. So old tricky Bill goes to Fla. and hire Spurrier. Archer looks good his first year with the last of the Stovall recruits. Then bam! The bottom falls out. And this set LSU back for years. True story, but most fans can't handle it. And Visor boy made it a point to rub our noses in it every time that we played.

Spurrier was the coach at Duke. When Arnsparger left after only 3 (successful) seasons in '86
This just proves the above posters point that usually people don't know what they are talking about when looking back with 20/20 hindsight.
Spurrier's first year at Duke was 1987, the same as Archer's first year at LSU
Here is his resume thru the 86 season
1978 QB Coach Florida
1979 QB C Ga Tech
1980-82 OC Duke
1983-85 HC Tampa Bay Bandits (USFL)
1978-89 HC Duke
In 1986 Arnsparger's last year at LSU Spurrier DID NOT COACH anywhere.
His only HC experience was in the USFL (though he did do ok) He had been OC at Duke. The same offseason as LSU hired Archer and Duke hired SOS, Alabama, Texas and USC all hired new coaches. Hindsight is 20/20. SOS may have said he wanted the LSU job, but it Dec 1986 it was not clear how good of a HC he would be. I really wish this myth would die the death it deserves.

Nine years ago, Spurrier was an unemployed former United States Football League coach after the league had folded in March 1986 and was interviewed for the LSU head coaching job, vacated when Bill Arnsparger left to become athletic director at UF.
"I couldn't even get a second interview," Spurrier said. "I think I was one of about 15 [candidates) they brought in."
During the initial interview process, Spurrier was bounced around from one Louisiana heavy-hitter to another, each a member of the LSU Board & Athletic Council's board of supervisors.
"I said, `What are we doing meeting all these guys? They're not going to select the coach, are they?'" Spurrier recalled. "`Oh, yeah they are!', they told me. I guess that's Louisiana politics."
