I think that's probably spot on, though I think that can be said with almost all genres of any art form.
quote:
You may not like cheesy B horror, that's fine, it's an acquired taste. But are you telling me you don't like The Thing? Alien? You might just need to branch out.
I can honestly say I don't recall ever having seen the Thing. Alien is great, but I consider that more Sci-Fi than Horror, which is obviously just being nitpicky. I actually think some sci-fi horror is good (Sphere and Pandorum come to mind aside from Alien).
Look, horror just isn't my thing as a general notion. There's nothing wrong with people who like it, I was just inquiring. I said that most of the horror movies I've seen are just flat bad movies. But even the ones that are good I don't go rushing to the theater to see and I will only rarely put one on Netflix or my blu-ray player.
People applying my comments about (1) predictability; (2) implausibility; (3) lack of character depth; (4) bad acting; (5) bad directing; and/or (6) bad premises to movies like
Dawn of the Dead (Original)
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Original)
Halloween (Original)
A Nightmare on Elm Street (Original)
Scream
28 Days Later
The Thing
Alien
The Shining
Psycho
The Exorcist
are taking my comments out of context.
Mostly I wanted to know the appeal of them, because even bad ones get slobbed all over. Tactical pointed that
quote:. Well, The Cabin in the Woods had a 92% on RT and that movie was a steaming pile of shite in a basket made of burning hair, so I find these critiques claiming recent horror films to be great a bit dubious.
"You're Next" [is at] 80% on the Tomatoes right now
Nevertheless, it really was just an inquiry into the minds of horror film lovers, not a knock on classic horror. I even extended the olive branch of self-humiliation by admitting to liking stoner comedy. shite, I said I like Sex Drive, the Rise of Taj, and the Naked Mile. I'm pretty sure I've seen American Pie... 2 about 10 times (thanks, TBS). Which is why I asked if it was similar to liking "bad" comedy.
I'm not saying horror as a genre is filled with excrement. I'm not attacking horror fans. Jesus, I feel like I just asked a bunch of black people why they think corporate America is racist. I'M NOT racist, I'm merely ASKING why YOU feel that way.

WTF? Most horror movies get lambasted by everyone but people who like horror. There are very few horror movies that truly cross the divide.
So what are some "bad horror movies," that get slobbed all over?

But see, Cabin in the Woods wasn't made for you. It was a fantastic film, one of the best of the year for me. But clearly your attitude toward horror kind of obscured how you view that film. There was nothing about the film that was bad. Not even the ending (which some people who enjoyed the film had a problem with).

But you said "horror genre," nto "bad horror films." If you are going to insult the genre (which is kind of how it came off) then yeah that includes Alien and the Exorcist.

Right but see above. Horror genre =\= stoner comedy. That's a niche subgenre at best.

I almost universally dislike horror movies. Most of them I've seen suffer from: (1) predictability; (2) implausibility; (3) lack of character depth; (4) bad acting; (5) bad directing; and/or (6) bad premises.
That's exactly what you said. "I almost universally dislike horror films because of x, y, and z."

I'm not attacking horror fans.
People defend things they like. If you can't handle that then I wouldn't post on the Internets.

Jesus,
Cill Broseph this is a good discussion let's keep it going and not overreact.

Right and plenty of people have answered. Are you nto happy with the answers?
You commented about all of that but missed one of my most important points:
quote:
If anything, and like Baloo alluded to, I love horror films because most of the time horror directors are fearless (ironic I know). They are willing to try anything. That's both endearing and exciting.
There's at least one why. People have also included nostalgia, the anxiety, etc. All valid answers.
