Having trouble lighting my BGE (Solved)

I have had it for almost a year now. Always been able to start it with little effort. Lately it has been very difficult to get a good fire burning. I have the firebox filled, I just totally cleaned it out (shopvac'ed everything out). It lights then goes to embers with heavy smoke. Been using only big pieces of charcoal so that nothing stops the airflow.
Can anyone give advice?

I've had the same problem. Did filets tonight. Cleaned it out, filled with large pieces of lump, lit it up.......and got nothing but a bunch of smoke.
I hooked up a fan to blow into the bottom vent, and 15 minutes later I was at 600. Worked like a charm.

I just got that as a Fathers Day gift. Works like a charm! Better than the Bernz propane torch I used to use.

that doesn't make much sense. it's not a very complicated piece of machinery. if there is charcoal and fire in it its going to light unless there is 30 lbs of ash inside of it, which you said there is not.

Which is why i made this thread. It doesn't make sense. Was wondering if others have had problems with specific charcoal or any other factors that I may not think of.

Are you using really cheap lump? what are you currently using to light it?

If your problems didnt start until you tried that charcoal, try a different brand. go pick up a bag of royal oak lump. its affordable and works

It's called a looftlighter......the best way I can describe it is a cross between a blow dryer and a curling iron on steroids.
I had my fire ready to roll this morning in about 10 minutes using it.

Some simple things can go awry after a good cleaning. Make sure the fire grate (metal plate w holes in it) is placed correctly....the holes have a slight bevel that should widen toward the floor of the cooker. Next, make sure the cutout opening in the ceramic fire ring is aligned with the lower draft door. It is easy to set it back into place slightly off, so make sure it's correctly oriented. Also check the small round holes in the sides of the fire ring/bowl, it's easy for them to be plugged with small chunks of charcoal or other schmutz.
Finally, I like to use a longer burning type of fire starter, such as a sawdust/paraffin cube. Have tried many methods, and two or three of these cubes do the trick for me.

I STILL am having troubles. I used 3 lighters tonight where I normally would only use 1.

I use the sawdust cubes as well and I've never had trouble in the five years or so. Leave lid open and bottom vent wide open. I clean mine about every other time or so. I also have not had a gasket in the last three years and it works just like always regardless of what I'm cooking.
