per the article 40 schools have to have teams for it to be a full championship sport. how many schools have teams now? any idea?

So if thats the case are they allowing sand volleyball AT LSU in order to make mens soccer an official varsity sport AT LSU as well?
If so, then I like it.

It was around 30 the last time I looked, which was when the LSU announcement was first made. I'll see if I can find the website that was tracking it.

It could potentially help with that. But I think LSU would need to add another couple sports like Rifle and Bowling (not sure why we don't have a bowling team already, all the SWAC schools do).

shite if thats the case then why isnt rugby?
over 1000 colleges have rugby teams and it is also considered one of the fastest growing sports. Do they have to be considered varsity teams to reach that 40?

This obviously hasn't been updated recently, but here is the site:
LINK
It lists 34 schools. LSU makes 35, and there may be some more as well. Tulane and ULM on the list, South Carolina and Alabama as well.
Don't be concerned with D2 schools on the list, they potentially could count toward the 40 schools to gain sanctioning.

Women's rugby shares the emerging sport classification with Sand Volleyball.
Until the way Title IX scholarships are counted (I say don't count football at all), you won't see a push for the NCAA to add a predominantly male sport. And you won't see many schools adding male sports in general, without offsetting it by adding a couple women's sports.

This is the exact reason why I think title IX is holding sports back

mens rugby has 0.
all of those 1000s you refer to are just club teams.

The answers you just read for the first time in this thread are the exact reason you think Title IX is holding sports back?
You form opinions on weighty issues awfully quick.

Those were about which sports were sanctioned or not. Just like not many people know rifle is sanctioned.
My point was that it is frustrating that certain male sports cant become varsity even if they are sanctioned and it is strictly because of title IX.
I read about a perfect example that happened at Brown a while back where 2 mens and 2 womens sports were cut because they didnt have funding. But the womens teams appealed and were allowed to continue because of title IX and the mens teams couldnt do the same.

nope i think its 14 total that have varsity rugby
I know the 1000 are clubs, but scroll down

If adding sand volleyball (and, potentially, equestrian and/or rifle at a later point in time) allows for another men's sport, men's soccer would already have a stadium with decent seating numbers to play in. Some of the other potential sports would require construction of new facilities. Something to keep in mind.

And nine of those are in the NCAA. Two of those Division 1, with another in Division 2.
Only 37 more and there can be an NCAA championship.
ETA: I'm sorry about 5 are D2. So about 34 more are needed, if those schools choose to use Rugby as the sport they play D1 in provisionally.
