He called today’s country “bad rock with a fiddle,” and further expanded on those comments during a recent interview.

It was far from a clarification or apology. During a chat with Rolling Stone published Monday (Aug. 5), Petty laments what is missing in country music, a genre he says roots the Heartbreakers.

“I don’t really see a George Jones or a Buck Owens or any anything that fresh coming up,” Petty explains. “I’m sure there must be somebody doing it, but most of that music reminds me of rock in the middle 80s where it became incredibly generic and relied on videos.”

Petty didn’t name names or call out a specific sound before backing away from the topic. “I hate to generalize on a whole genre of music, but it does seem to be missing that magic element that it used to have,” he furthers. “I’m sure there are people playing country that are doing it well, but they’re just not getting the attention that the s—tier stuff gets.”

I agree with him 100%. How many of these "country" artists actually write their own songs these days?

Tom Petty

He's definitely not wrong. Modern country music sucks. It's bad pop rock with a little fiddle and slide guitar thrown in.

But Kenny Chesney is super talented and all his songs are unique and catchy and he's better than all the old country anyway and he's cute and supposed to be a nice guy and his music isn't crap and blah blah blah....

Tom Petty is clueless. An "artist" like Luke Bryan might be the single greatest songwriter of this generation. For example, here's a snippet from his 2011 album "Tailgates & Tanlines" -

"Cottonwood fallin' like snow in July
Sunset, riverside, 4 wheel drives
In a tail light circle

Roll down the windows, turn it on up
Pour a little crown in a dixie cup
Get the party started

[Chorus:]
Girl, you make my speakers go boom boom
Dancin' on the tailgate in a full moon
That kinda thing makes a man go mmm hmmm
You're lookin' so good in what's left of those blue jeans
Drip of honey on the money make her gotta be
The best buzz I'm ever gonna find
Hey, I'm a little drunk on you
And high on summertime

If you ain't a 10 you're a 9.9
Tippin' n' spillin' that home-made wine
On your tied up T-shirt
Every little kiss is drivin' me wild
Throwin' little cherry bombs into my fire
Good god almighty"
