I worked the 1994 PGA Championship for TNT/CBS there
I've seen you talk about it several times, but how long did you work golf tourneys for CBS?

I started in 1991 at the International the week after Daly won the PGA at Crooked Stick and worked until the last tournament in 2006. My wife and I would visit her sister in Dallas in the spring and I would work the Colonial in Fort Worth. I worked the Women's US Open here in the Springs for NBC the year Annika won at The Broadmoor. Over the years I worked a couple of Senior tournaments in Denver for ABC. You didn't do it for the money. I did it to get inside the ropes and get a first hand look at how a network puts a golf telecast on the air.

That is really awesome.
I always enjoy reading your stories from some of the events.

It's kind of crazy how I got hired. A buddy of mine had a ticket he wasn't using to the Monday practice round of the '91 International. I drove up and watched a little golf and then went up to the driving range. There were only a handful of players practicing and less spectators. I saw Ken Venturi hitting balls by himself at the end of the range and walked down and watched him hit some shots. We started chatting and I had read an article in one of the golf magazines that gave a behind the scenes look at how they get a telecast on the air. We chatted for a few more minutes and I asked him if they needed any local help that week for the tournament. He gave me a ride to the CBS compound in his golf cart, introduced me to Chuck Will, the Associate Producer, who asked me some questions and hired me. If you were allergic to 4 letter words you wouldn't have lasted long. The stuff I heard in the headsets was profane and funny. If you messed up, you heard about it.

That is a legitimate cool story

There was a reason the CBS crew called Frank Chirkanian, the Godfather of CBS golf the Ayotollah. He ruled with an iron fist, was extremely demanding, but the crew loved him and respected him. He was one of the reasons why the Masters has only been covered by CBS. Seven years later when they roll the credits at the end of the telecast I still recognize a lot of names.

Thats really cool. I've been inside the ShotLink trailers at Zurich and it felt like a shuttle launch . I can't imagine what TV was like

A friend of our family, Mark, works in the CBS control room. He calls the camera they go to as part of his duty. Does all the big tour stops, and college hoops. Pretty cool guy, even cooler job.

Phil just laid the smack down on Tiger during his press conference. I'm watching it live so don't have a direct quote but he was asked about him playing at a high level and tiger playing at a high level right now ..
Phil said that he is glad that tiger won last week because he doesn't remember the last time tiger won an event the week before a major then go on to win that major ..
Then gave a huge wink

Apparently threeputt works for PGATour.com. Here's the photo on their homepage right now.

The joke's kind of on Phil. Tiger won the Bridgestone and the PGA in 2007. It was only 6 years ago. I get what Phil was doing though...and I like it.

I would love to see the PGA come to Houston or San Antonio (TPC Oaks)
TPC San Antonio shouldn't host a Tour event, much less letting a major near that golf course
