MLB ump 'imposes will' on the game?

So I was watching the Red Sox / Mariners game last night and saw an ump outright make up a rule.

The Mariners coach was headed to the mound to pull the pitcher and pointed to the bullpen with his left hand, then tapped and pointed to the pen with his right hand to call out the right hander.

Well the ump said he called for the left hander and 'made' him bring in the lefty.

Think I would have told the ump to get fricked, or since he made me bring in the lefty i would have told him to throw one pitch 20 feet in the air and fake an injury, so i could bring in the guy i wanted.

what says the MSB?

I'm a big Red Sox fan and they game from 7 runs down to win the game ... but anyway

I always wondered if that was a rule.

Pretty silly, i would've told the ump to get fricked also. Couldn't he have cut him some slack anyways, isn't that guy filling in for Wedge?

Why is that even a rule? This isn't Germany circa 1940.

Anyways, couldn't the Manager just bring the lefty in, have him throw a practice pitch and say he was hurt, then bring in the righty?

yea

Acting Mariners manager Robby Thompson meant to go to right-hander Yoervis Medina to face Shane Victorino and Dustin Pedroia, knowing all along he would call on lefty Oliver Perez to face David Ortiz.

But crew chief Gary Darling saw Thompson tap his left arm, and forced him to bring in Perez. Victorino capitalized on Seattle's confusion, punching a single to right-center, and it was 7-5 with still nobody out at Fenway at the highest of decibel levels.

"I don't know that you ever really know it," said Farrell. "But any time you get a leadoff walk it kind of breathes a little life in you. I think after Victorino's base hit to right that brought us within two, that seemed to be not only further momentum but it was getting closer."

"I wasn't going to the left-hander," Thompson said. "I thought once I pointed to the bullpen, I had a chance to go to who I wanted. By the time I went to tap on the arm, he'd already turned around and went to the left-hander.

Something learned for me. That won't happen again and I'll double check and see what that ruling is. They're probably right, but I was not going to the lefty. I was basically motioning to the 'pen and I was hoping to go to my right arm and tap on it."

My dad says its more of a courtesy. To change that reflexively would have no impact.

even after the game? Not saying you are wrong(I thought the pitcher had to enter the field of play, but if you are right those are odd post game quotes. You would think the Mariners would appeal the game.

quote:

"If there was anything today for me, it was a lesson learned that if you make a motion with either hand, that's it. I didn't realize that

quote:

"When you have two guys up at the same time, you've got to be clear on who you ask for first," Farrell said. "Robby's left arm went up first and he quickly tried to change it, but Gary Darling kept the first call in order and that was to ask for the left-hander. That's what I saw on the field."

I saw this explained as that once the ump is informed of the change it is final. A signal to the pin is not considered telling the ump who is coming in, but the ump misinterpreted the rule.

Pretty sure the signal is nothing until the relief pitcher enters the field of play

So he could have just about done anything and it doesn't matter until the guy comes into the outfield

That was crazy. Why didn't he just let him throw 1 pitch and then bring in the other guy? He let him stay in the game and got shelled?
