Trawling for bait

Does anybody know the rules on pulling a 16'or less trawl for bait? I thought you could do that anytime, anywhere. But a friend said he thought you could only do it when the shrimp season is open.
anybody know for sure?

Pretty sure it's only during trawl season unless you have a bait license.

If you're looking for croakers, the ones caught in a trawl ain't worth a shite.

Unless you have a bait permit you can't trawl for bait, cast net only.

I think you can only pull a 6' test trawl

thanks guys. I guess I will be cast netting it then. going to the camp for 4 days and don't want to pay for 4 days worth of live shrimp.

Rabbit food + cast net. Let the food soak a few hours.
I think rabbit food is what we use, it sinks.
When I lived in SC for a few summers, they used to put 6"PVC into the bottom with holes drilled into the sides. They would fill it up with dog food or rabbit food and let it sit. Then come along and cast net around the pole to catch the shrimp.

definitely going to sweeten the dock area. I have used Range Cubes in the past and they worked pretty good. A buddy that came down a few weeks ago was going to pick up some range cubes and he got some other stuff. it is loose and most of it sinks. it works pretty good. I have two big lights I put on the dock and usually I can get enough pogeys and 30 or 40 shrimp without working too hard.

Croakers are what you want right now.
Eta: your camp is in leeville right? Or am I getting you mixed up with someone else?

Huh? How do you think the bait guys get them? You just have to make short pulls.

Leeville is correct. yea croakers are real good. i know a little spot to catch them if the bride will let me make a pass over there. She gets impatient to get to the fishing spot.

I recommend getting to bada bing early on day 1 to get croakers, then cast for bait.
Whereabouts is your camp? Ours is right past boudreauxs.

This is what a trawled croaker looks like...
Excellent hardhead bait.

I like big arse baits. We are going after the big ones to try to get her on the star leader board.
we had caught some croakers that were 3 or 4 inches in the cast net. Alden had caught one on a hook that was probably 7 or 8". we were at a little rig and had caught some nice ones on the small croakers. Libby pulled the big one out and asked if she could use that. I said if you aren't scared to get your arm broke. She had that thing out there so fast it would make your head spin. she got a hit and me Alden was saying let it run with it, let it run........after she couldn't take it any longer she reeled up and set the hook. biggest trout of the day.

Light tackle. Small jighead. Little piece of cut mullet. Those croakers will keep for days and be just like the day you caught them. No comparison to the stuff caught in a trawl.
As for the trout, go far far away from Grand Isle

I'm going to bring a little spinning rod and try to catch some by the docks.

Correct. Now, if you are along the coast, outside waters stay open the better part of the year.
