Just got back from spending a few days in Austin and thought I'd post my results. We definitely tried to go all out.

The headliner was Uchi. Needless to say, it was the best sushi I've had. The foie gras nigiri was possibly the single greatest thing I've ever eaten. Hama chili was also great, as was the hot rock wagyu. Deserts, particularly the peanut butter semifreddo, were exceptional. The only thing I wouldn't do again was the Shag roll. It may have tasted good, but the fish wasn't on display as much as I would have preferred for such an experience. Also, the suishan Sake was easily the best I've ever had, which isn't saying much.

Tacodeli- About as gourmet as tacos can get. Had the wild boar, sweet potato, and mojo fish tacos. Also ate most of my gf's brisket which was outstanding.

Teji's- Great Indian with the best naan I've ever had (minus the piece of plastic wrap I found baked into mine)on UT's campus.

Ranch 616 - This place seems to be polarizing, but we had a good experience. Our frog legs were very meaty and juicy (feel free to insert joke) and came over a delicious bed of poblano mashed potatoes. Both our quail and duck entrees were solid. Unfortunately we were both too hungover to drink, but they had what looked to be a stellar selection of margarita and house cocktails.

We attempted to go to Franklin, but we underestimated the line. Definitely not something you just approach off the street. Ended up having an adequate meal at Stubbs.

Went to a few food trucks, including Goldis sausage. Good enough sausage, but nothing to write home about.

Also went to several good bars, as well, mainly Easy Tiger, White Horse, Violet Crown, Handlebar. Also, our hostel, Firehouse, had an excellent bar downstairs with a semi-burlesque atmosphere and superb cocktails.

As an added bonus, ate at both Darrell's and Old Tyme on the way to and from, respectively.

Pretty satisfying overall, to say the least, although I am disappointed we didn't do Franklin.

I'm planning on John Mueller or La Barbecue instead of Franklin

The line at Franklin really is absurd. It was basically a tailgate reaching around the block.

And worth it.

That's how you have to approach it. Have fun!

But I completely understand not wanting to.

Lots of gourmet taco places around. Tacodeli is hit or miss. Last time I ate there I didn't care for it. Give me Torchy's any day over Tacodeli.

La Barbecue is a food truck and owned by the former Franklin Pitmaster.

Not going to Whip In = fail.
Not going to Curra's = fail.

Next time I'll be sure to eat at every single food truck in Austin in one weekend.

Yea, that's what I realized pretty quickly. Bring a cooler and chairs and chill. Unfortunately we had neither so my Franklin visit will have to be postponed.

Awesome. I think I'm going in November. You didn't happen to be part of a bachelor party were you? For DM?

It's that worth it? I've gotta sell it to a bunch of dudes on a bachelor party.

It was one of my favorite meals ever. It's kinda small, does not accept reservations, and it's family style seating, so not sure if it would be good for a bachelor party.

La Barbecue has the old longtime pit-master from Franklins. Just as good IMO and much shorter line, plus a keg full of free beer and music most days.

Torchy's Tacos are a must try also.

Torchy's was a letdown for me

although I will admit that the fact that they were sucking out the septic tanks while we were there could (it did) have been why our experience was less than stellar

that smell...
