Anything should be an upgrade over Simon and Reid last year who were terrible, I like the talent we have recruited. Young guys will make some mistakes but they will play all out as opposed to trying not to get hurt and go nfl.

Why is no one talking about Micah Eugene??
The guy is going to surprise people this year

Ricky Jefferson will be the best of this freshman class.

I like him in last year's role. The dime plays a lot so he'll get plenty of snaps. I don't think there is a player on the roster better suited for that role than Eugene.

Haha no i completely misread the part where you said he wasnt horrible. Was drinking last night my fault
He was not the guy to replace TM7. He was behind Simon at that big bookend type CB spot. Never was going to be guy to replace TM.
I agree we are extremely deep at CB. But, I really think Collins and Mills are the 2 starters this year. Collins might go pro. Then, you would have Mills and White and RR as the top 3.
Chavis has been grooming Collins for this year and ill be shocked if a true freshman comes in and takes his spot.
You do realize that there are a lot of top recruits that end up doing nothing?? Not saying White is gonna do nothing. But, let the kid get some SEC PT before we peg him as all world.

I'm looking forward to seeing Ricky play this year. I think he has a very good shot at playing quality DB in some form, especially in the nickel.

What Jefferson has going for him the most is moving inside to safety. They are a little thin there, so there are going to be some pretty good opportunities for early playing time.
It's a little more crowded out at CB

Crowded at both. Loston, Martin, Thompson, Sandolph, all play safety. Eugene can play both.
Jefferson might see random spot PT, but i dont see him seeing legit minutes this year, besides ST.
BTW, our STs are going to be LOADED with talent, like usual.

Good point on the bigger boundary corner thing, but at the end of the day, you'll want your best guys out there.
Collins and Mills will have to match up better against a big and average size receiver tandem than Mills and White. Given that Mills isn't small, Mills and White may be a better package.
Robinson has more length then all of them. Of course, let's see what kind of summer he's had in the weight room and how quickly he picks things up.
The thing about Collins is if he doesn't start, the nickel role is no guarantee. That nickel back plays inside and as a bigger corner, covering a slot receiver wasn't the most natural thing for him. If, say, White starts, Collins could come in as a nickel in much the same way Simon did in 2011: Mathieu would start on the outside, then move inside in the nickel package and Simon would come in and play on the outside. If White starts, he could slide inside in nickel coverage and Collins could come in and play on the boundary.

RR isnt even on campus yet. His summer will be about 3 weeks if he gets here today. I really think he will redshirt just because he hasnt reported to campus yet. Hes coming soon, but still is behind everyone that is already here. Yes, his potential is out of this world. But he still has a lot of growing to do, just like every other incoming freshman. Rarely do players go from high school to SEC starter from day 1. Unless if youre a freak like PP was.
And thats exactly how Collins got on the field last year. Simon and Mills were the starters. When we went nickel, Mills would bump inside and Collins and Simon were the true CBs.
Id just be really really surprised if Collins doesnt start considering everything hes done and all the work hes put in was for this season. All the coaching and grooming by Chavis was for this season. Chavis likes Collins ALOT too. IMO, Collins will be better than Simon and could very well go pro after next year. Both he and Mills were better that Simon during the backend of the season last year. I just think alot of people are doubting him or forgetting about him because of all the good looking DB prospects. You gotta remember, very rarely do we have a true freshman come in and take a vets spot and become a full time starter. Im more excited about Collins for this upcoming season that I am for Mills. Mills has already shown hes a great looking CB and will improve. Collins will show this year how good he is. I just think alot of people are selling Collins short because of the DBs we have coming in. And they are good looking DBs. But, Collins has proved not only can he play in the SEC, but play at a very high level and can be a game changer.

I'm more concerned about the safety play especially if we play a lot of base defense like we did last year. Think the corners will be okay.
Posted on 7/20/13 at 1:25 pm to MFV
ehh... not really worried about DBs that much. Martin will be a great safety and Loston is solid and a leader. Dont think we will have any problems at safety.

The system Chavis runs when it comes to CBs is 1 tall, rangy, physical true book end CB with a smaller playmaker/ball hawk.
Dude, what? Did Mo Clai and PP7 fit that bill? Nope, they didn't. I'm really not sure where you got this idea from, other than the fact that our corners last year fit this description.
2009: PP7 & Chris Hawkins - both the same height; not sure which is the rangy guy and which is the "ball hawk" bc it seems like PP7 was both of those
2010: PP7 & Claiborne - This duo pretty much blows up your little theory. Both are big corners.
2011: Claiborne & Mathieu/Simon - Simon was the true second corner - both Simon and Claiborne are tall and rangy
2012: Simon & Mills - the only year that fits your example because Mills is the first smaller corner we've had under Chavis

C mills
S martin
S loston
C Collins
I cant see a freshman taking collins cb spot. if I had to choose a freshman that has the talent to challenge collins I put my money on R. Robinson.
