CBS: NFL Head Coach Rankings...Payton No. 4

CSP #4
4. Sean Payton, New Orleans Saints: There is no better offensive mind in the NFL. He is smart, confident and arrogant -- and he coaches that way. His players love that about him. He was sorely missed last year when he sat out with the Bountygate suspension. He can be combative at times, which I kind of like, but there is no denying his smarts when it comes to offensive football. I want him calling my plays.

You get your team within one play of the Super Bowl, you're going to get a nod. Especially is the people deciding don't regularly watch your games.

I would have Coughlin ahead of Belichick today. The Pats haven't beat them since before Spygate.

May be the saints fan in me, but I would put SP above Harbaugh. Comparing the teams they inherited, in their first season as HC, SP did a miracle gettin the Saints to where they got in 06.

If Payton wouldn't have gotten suspended he would probably be number 1. Even with just a slightly better finish to last season

Nah...the media is on Belichick's nuts. I actually don't have a huge problem with him being at #4. Jon Harbaugh deserves the praise he gets, but I could make a case for Payton being 3, as well.

The NFLN Top 100 has about worn me out of Top lists. Why is there now so much publicity and concern about rankings? Seems the game itself is being pushed to the side over these.
Okay, here's a stat: NFL Alltime Winning Pct.-
#21 Sean Payton .646
Bill Cowher .623
Bud Grant .622
Joe Gibbs .621
Bill Walsh .609
Tom Landry .607
Andy Reid .583
Mike Shanahan .572
Bill Parcells .570
Chuck Noll .566
Jeff Fisher .538
Pete Carroll .518

Go for it on 4th down, in overtime, on your side of the field, and give the ball back to the best offense in the league with 5 yards to win the game.
Real smart coaching.

I was at that game. What made that decision even worse was the full context.
We had gone three and out on a couple successive drives immediately prior to that. Smith initially sent out the punt team, THEN called time out, then sent his offense back out, and then called a very obvious play that fooled absolutely no one.
Terrible decision making process, terrible decision (even if he had made it, it was a bad decision given the context), and terrible execution.
I actually felt bad for him after that.

How many times was Tom Coughlin almost fired by the Giants?
That would have been a terrible decision

Going from unranked (and unemployed) last year to #4 this year -- not too shabby.

quit being blind homer/Falcon haters and name 10 coaches in the NFL better than Smith.

as well he should, they've made the playoffs multiple times and remember he's took over a dumpster fire after Vick and Petrino.
