Good Breakdown of Anderdon/Davis Pairing

ATH has woken up and this is a nice in depth look at the much maligned Ryno/Davis combo.

There is hope and a reasonable case that this combo can work defensively.

This begs the question: if Davis and Anderson were so good together in these two instances, what lineups made their pairing so atrocious on average? One of the big culprits was lineups in which Vasquez was pushed to an off-guard position. In lineups that featured Brian Roberts along with Vasquez, Davis, and Anderson, the Hornets ceded an eye-popping 1.328 points per possession over 161 possessions and 92 minutes.
That's great job of really disecting the numbers, great article.

If Holiday's improvement over Vasquez can come close to equaling Evans's drop-off from Aminu, the Holiday-Gordon-Evans-Anderson-Davis lineup could be expected to post a close to league-average defense.
Yes! I love hoping for an average defense

28th to 15th in defense would be a hell of a jump. It probably puts the team in the playoffs. Not sure we can demand any more than that.

Well that is an assumption based on last years statistics. I think it is a safe assumption that Davis's defense will improve in season two. His defensive numbers were pretty bad last season.

Defense is one thing. I worry more about rebounding with that lineup. We will get killed on the boards. Very few second chances for us on offense, and way too many second chances for the opposing team.

I think the new additions to the roster completely change the AD/Ryno combination. More defensive help . . . quickness, athleticism, etc.

Nice article. The real question about the defense of this unit IMO is can Monty come up with schemes to stop the LeBrons and Durants. All indications are that Tyreke is a decent defender, but to stop those guys one on one you have to be elite. What is the cost of helping Tyreke and is that worth swapping Evan's offense for Aminu's defense? It's entirely possible that Aminu is in the crunch time lineup and Monty pairs whoever is hottest between Gordon and Evans next to Jrue.

Interesting. I think that article also backs up the idea that Anderson and Aminu belong on the floor together. Anderson is a weak defender and rebounder and Aminu is a strong defender and rebounder. They complement themselves even more on offense, with Anderson out by the 3-pt line and Aminu looking for lobs and crashing the boards. Anderson is never going to get offensive boards because he won't be near the basket.

I don't know what changed, but Anderson was disappointing on the offensive glass last year. He was one of the best offensive rebounders in the league in Orlando.
ETA: It probably had something to do with the extra offensive burden he was carrying last year.

This link talks about the Spurs and Celtics defenses. Specifically, how the Celtics had one of the best defenses in the league in 2011-2012 but were only 20th in DReb. If anything, Anderson's lack of rim protecting abilities could be the liability. Perhaps that can be overcome if he becomes great at anticipating and rotating.

Plus, Quail Man said something in another thread about pace and it's effect on defenses that got me thinking about this article I read a few years ago. Didn't remember that Rohan wrote it, but it's quite interesting. It breaks Pace down further into Offensive and Defensive Speed.

Not sure if there's a path to follow here. But the data does seem to support the idea that a team can play fast on offense (Chicago/Orlando both around 100 Speed Index) and still be able to dominate defensively.

I think they should get more minutes and even start against some smaller teams or when teams have smaller lineups like the Heat like to do but yea that article doesnt tell the whole story. Teams could only score .5 points per possession but if they get a million possessions that stat is irrelevant

We'll see. I just think Davis is such a finesse player. I don't like the idea of him fighting for boards against gasol or whoever all game. AD's per 36 ppg was almost 17 ppg. If he actually plays close to 36 minutes per game this season and Ryan Anderson puts up his 16 like last season, we should be one of the highest scoring teams with the Ryno/AD lineup. Very exciting at least.
