This is what I read:
Shipping Legalities
Federal Law requires that all modern firearms be shipped to a holder of a valid Federal Firearms License (FFL) only. The recipient must have an FFL; however the sender is not required to have one. Any person who is legally allowed to own a firearm is legally allowed to ship it to an FFL holder for any legal purpose (including sale or resale).
Here is exactly what the ATF 'Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide' (ATF P 5300.4) says:
(B9) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by carrier?
A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by carrier to a resident of his or her own state or to a licensee in any state. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm. [18 U. S. C. 922( a)( 2)( A) and 922( e), 27 CFR 178.31]
(B8) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm through the U. S. Postal Service?
A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own state or to a licensee in any state. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. A nonlicensee may not transfer any firearm to a nonlicensed resident of another state. The Postal Service recommends that longguns be sent by registered mail and that no marking of any kind which would indicate the nature of the contents be placed on the outside of any parcel containing firearms.

I wasn't trying to be hard to get along with, but as chickenshit as the Feds are about guns, I wanted to know for sure.
I don't believe FedEx will ship guns to individuals anyway, unless they are FFLs. USPS looks like his best option.

USPS no longer ships any guns, whether rifles, shotguns or handguns. FedEx and USP are the only legal options for shipping guns. As referenced above, yes, you can legally ship your gun to yourself using UPS or FedEx. I've done this before. They key here is the gun is being shipped to yourself, NOT being shipped from a seller to a buyer. The latter DOES require the services of an FFL. In addition, one can ship a gun to a gunsmith for repair (and receive it back from the gunsmith) without having to use an FFL.
To the OP, you might want to compare the expense of shipping the gun vs checking it as luggage. Last year when we did this, shipping was slightly more expensive. OTOH, there's always some worry when you fly w/ a gun and you're anxiously watching the luggage carousel, hoping your firearm successfully made the trip.

Yep, a bunch of times.
In fact, I just got back from a KS pd hunt last week. LINK You'll have a GRAND time. Bring plenty of ammo, lots of sunscreen and good binocs. For a rest, I've always been happy using a bipod on the forend and a sand bag at the rear. If shooting more than one day, run some "Wipe Out" through your barrel after the first day's hunt. Be prepared to fight the wind and it's effect on your bullet. Give us a report on the hunt, complete w/ pics.

How would they know what it was? UPS, Fedex, USPS, they aren't gonna x-ray the package or anything. Dissasmbled and put into a smaller box wouldn't raise any eyebrows, and it's not a heavy item.

The times I've shipped guns or ammo through UPS, they did not inspect the boxes. I don't know if they xray packages or not. Since one's on the honor system, I guess one could find a way to beat them, but why would one want to do that? I'm sure the penalties are significant (especially w/ USPS since they don't legally ship guns) if one gets caught. Just not worth it to me.......
