compare these two scenarios...
xbox:
I login. i want to play bf3. I send a party chat req to 6 friends. they are all playing different games. everyone can get into the chat, say "let me finish up, be on in 5, sure, sounds good, let me go get a drink" etc
ps3:
I login. i want to play bf3. Id have to send 6 typed out messages on a bitch arse controller to convey my interest to party up? then everyone would have to type a message back?! id shoot myself.

All they had to see was that I signed in and they knew what time it was

They'll say this all day long, but if they had the option to BS while their friends were playing something else, they'd jump all over it.
The other thing is a lot of times you can sit there at the dasboard with your friends and discuss/decide what game you want to play.
Then it's also great for joining games. When someone on PS3 logs in you have to back out invite them then wait and see if they are even going to be playing the same game as you or wait for them to type out a message saying "invite me". On Xbox they can just join your party if they want in.
Also when playing if someone gets dropped for some reason it's frustrating as frick to have to send a message saying they got dropped and by that time the match may have already started. On Xbox with the party chat you just say "hey dickhead/IXISweat back out and pick me back up because I got kicked"
Just a PIA that party chat alleviates.

I first started to use it because I was tired of dealing with all of the other middle school chatter in game lobbies, so I'd start a party so I could just talk to my friends (not a big shite talker, which I know is big with da clan;). Then friends would just drop in who weren't playing the game just to say hi and chat. Got used to it, I suppose.
And that option shines even brighter when you compare to how nonexistent any kind of chat is on PSN.

I agree that the cross game chat is an awesome feature.
There have been several occasions when my party is still waiting for someone to show up for our designated time. So, you've got one guy playing Fable, I'm playing Super Meat Boy, someone else is playing their solo character in Borderlands 2 and then, boom, everybody is there and you start the game you all were there to play.
It's nice. Every modern console needs this feature.

This was my main use for it.
Instead of being in in-game chat, you could just chat with your friends playing.

Why even include shite like this? If you're using that piece of shite, either it a Sony piece of shite or a Microsoft piece of shite, you're not doing it right anyway.
So that everyone connected to PSN has the ability to communicate.
Sure, the quality may be poor, but many people may not care enough about voice chat to actually go out and purchase a separate headset. However, if one is included with the console, regardless of how cheap, it's likely they'll plug it in to their controller and use it (at least occasionally).
I still feel it was a mistake for Sony not to bundle a cheap mic with the PS3.

I agree with all of this. It's a piece of crap but it's *something*. It was a huge mistake for the PS3 not to have one packed in.
It's the catalyst for buying something better. In fact, I bet everyone here knows how bad the packed in 360 headset was because there was a short time there when they used it. Then they said "Screw this, I gotta get something better" and bought a real headset.

If they like chatting when they didn't think they would, they may be more likely to go and buy a more expensive mic

"Invite Party to Game". How wonderful is that?

Xbox really did a bang up job all around with Live.

And now I expect Sony to copy it to a T.

If they are smart, they will.

Lol I cracked up at this. But seriously, ill just send my friends game invites and if they have to do something first they can type out "hold on"
I admit the chat system on Xbox was better, but to act like typing out 5 letters takes forever is a little ridiculous

Good for them. It's just a great setup. Improvements can be made, obviously, and I'm sure they will. XBL was always being upgraded during the life cycle of the 360.

To every single player? I'd rather send a mass invite/message/voice message and take care of it just like that.

How cumbersome is the messaging system on PS3 though? It's horrible so to reduce it to "just typing out 5 letters" is a bit of an understatement IMO.
